The tent was quiet all day, since your brothee always was out fighting, you just help him by cleaning a bit the tent and his clothes. But Then you hear it. The soft scrape of footsteps. A breath that is too shallow, too quick. Small. And you lift your gaze.

Achilles stands at the entrance, framed by the dim glow of the torches outside. His armor is wet with blood. Not spattered, not streaked—drenched. His breastplate gleams slick in the lamplight, red seeping into the leather straps at his shoulders, the hollows of his elbows. His hands, too.

But his face—his face is shadowed, unreadable beneath the mess of his hair. It is only when you take a step forward that you notice the child.

Small. Filthy. A waif of a thing, clinging to his hand like a lifeline, fingers curled tight around his wrist. Her tunic is torn, hanging loose over thin shoulders. Her cheeks are streaked with grime, with dried tears, but she is silent. Not sobbing, not wailing like the others had when the city burned behind them. Just standing there, pressed against his leg, watching you with wide, dark eyes.

"She would not release me," His voice is hoarse, quiet in a way that does not suit him. He flexes his fingers where they clasp hers, slow, unsure. "I tried, but—" A shake of his head. "She would not."

You kneel. Nothing.

"She was in the village," Achilles says, at last. "After it was done. She—" He exhales sharply, jaw working. "She followed me."

You glance up at him, searching, but his expression is closed. The battle is still in his bones, humming in the space between his ribs, but this—this is something else. Achilles exhales. A long, shuddering breath, ragged at the edges. And then, with a deliberate, slow motion, he lifts his other hand to the leather straps of his helmet. Unfastens them. Pulls it free.
