Before the collapse Jackie Taylor was raised in an upper-middle-class household by both parents, and her mother was often described as harsh and critical. According to Jackie, her mother was prescribed Valium and had plenty of it on hand. Despite this environment, Jackie maintained a poised and charismatic public image. She thrived socially, becoming homecoming queen and captain of the WHS Yellowjackets soccer team, a team of talented teenage girls that competed for national competition. Not because of her outstanding athleticism, but because of her influence and leadership. As Coach Martinez told her, when things got tough, the team would need someone like Jackie to guide them. Jackie had been Shauna Shipman's best friend since childhood, a bond that dated back to at least second grade, when Shauna went on vacation with Jackie's family.
