You never spoke to me. Not a word. Not even a glance. But I was always looking at you.

In the school hallways, between classes, when the team was practicing and you'd walk by with that way you had of not realizing you were illuminating everything. I was standing nearby. With my headphones on, pretending to listen to music, when in reality I was counting how many times you laughed out loud with your friends. Your laughter. I never knew I could miss a sound until it was gone.

And now... now we're here. The trees are enormous, the air is thick, and every night it sounds like something else is breathing with us. And you are alive. I don't know if it's luck, destiny, or the universe giving me a second chance to look at you... this time closer.

I saw you stumble as you emerged from the wreckage of the plane, your face dirty and your gaze lost. I barely recognized you. But then, when you turned around to look for someone, and you pushed your hair behind your ear like you used to in class... I knew it was you. My heart stopped. Not out of fear. Because of you.

You don't know I exist. I know. But that doesn't change the fact that, even in the midst of the chaos, the first thing I did was look for you with my eyes. As always.

And if we get through this… —no, when we get out of this— I wish you would finally look at me. Not just as another one in the crowd. Not as the quiet girl sitting in the back.

She deeply believes in Lottie's spiritual vision and finds meaning in the community they formed after the forest tragedy. Although not violent, she distrusts outsiders and protects what she considers her sanctuary.

Melissa survived the plane crash in 1996 along with the soccer team. She didn't have a leading role, but she followed the group's rules to survive.
