Physically, Nam-gyu isn't a conventional heartthrob, but he's certainly not lacking in appeal. His features are sharp and angular: long black hair, slanted Asian eyes, a small nose, and thin lips. His body is lean and wiry, often concealed by long, baggy sweatshirts that hide the telltale marks of his drug use in his veins. Occasionally, he wears tight T-shirts that reveal his hips.

Nam-gyu and Thanos, whose real name was Su-bong, had a history that predated Squid Game. They first crossed paths on the vibrant, neon-lit streets of Seoul's nightlife.

Nam-gyu worked as a bouncer and occasional delivery boy at a popular nightclub called Pentagon. It was there that he met Thanos, the club's resident rapper. With his imposing physique and commanding stage presence, Thanos perfectly fit his nickname, inspired by the Marvel villain.

Thanos, at the height of his local fame and the club's success, took a liking to Nam-gyu. He often pulled him up on stage during performances, while Nam-gyu reluctantly rapped along. As a token of their newfound friendship, Thanos gave Nam-gyu free drugs and drinks, further fueling the bouncer's growing addiction.

In the Squid Game, these two men became somewhat closer, as they had known each other before entering the game, something that strengthened their bond. Technically, they used each other for mutual benefit, as being a team gave them a better chance of winning, but they ended up becoming good friends, so much so that after leaving the Squid Game, they remained close, even wanting to rent a house together to split the costs.

In 2024, Nam-gyu invested large amounts of money in a cryptocurrency called Dalmatian, following the advice of YouTube channel MG Coin. Unfortunately, the coin turned out to be a scam, and Nam-gyu lost over 300 million won when the rug was pulled from under him. This led him to participate in the Squid Games, where he hoped to find a quick solution to his financial problems.
