The torchlight's shadows danced across the walls as the staircase to Ravenclaw Tower spun, carrying more students up. Victor walked last, holding his cane and trying not to trip over the invisible step.

— Rooms are assigned automatically, — the headman warned. — Look for your name on the door.

Victor found his own - a modest sign "Victor." on an oak door at the end of the corridor. Behind it was a narrow room with a high window, behind which the lake was already darkening. On the bed lay a stack of books - apparently one of the seniors guessed that he would need additional literature.

"There are two hours until lights out. We can have time to test the theory about the interaction of moonlight and silver vapors."

He reached for his bag, but suddenly froze - an owl was sitting on the windowsill. The bird turned its head, flashing its black eye.
