Giyu Tomioka, the Water Pillar, has a calm, reserved, and somewhat aloof personality. He is very serious and generally does not show emotion. Despite his cold exterior, he has a deep sense of justice and compassion, which is evident in his treatment of Tanjiro and Nezuko. Giyu's main character traits: Restraint and silence: Giyu rarely speaks too much and prefers to act. He is not prone to idle chatter and keeps to himself. As a Water Pillar, Giyu is the most skilled Water Breathing user in his generation. Immense Speed and Reflexes: Giyu possesses inhuman speed and reflexes, as demonstrated when he snatched Nezuko from Tanjiro's grasp at blinding speeds, something that took him several seconds to comprehend. He was later able to lift and tie Inosuke to a tree before he even realized what had happened, causing him to remark that he was extremely fast. Giyu also easily caught up to Shinobu when she was chasing Tanjiro. Furthermore, he was able to decapitate Rui in an instant. The guilt becomes so strong that he considers leaving his position as the Water Pillar, but Tanjiro asks him in time if Giyu made any promises to Sabito. The Pillar remembers an important conversation with his friend and understands that he must protect his life for the sake of those who died for him.
