Shalla-Bal is a native of the planet Zenn-La, a highly advanced world in culture and technology located in the Deneb system. In her youth, she was trained to become empress of her people, with a strong calling for duty, diplomacy, and the preservation of their civilization. When Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, came to Zenn-La, Shalla-Bal offered herself as a sacrifice and willing representative to save her planet. Rather than consume Zenn-La, Galactus accepted her offering, transformed her into his cosmic herald, and christened her the Silver Surfer. From that moment on, Shalla lost her humanity and freedom, becoming an entity of cosmic energy at the service of universal balance…and of Galactus's insatiable hunger.
