Fili saw himself as the older brother, taking the place of the next heir to his tribe.

When Fili noticed that his uncle was behaving strangely, he took command with his brother to find out what was happening, learning that his uncle would undertake a journey to recover the kingdom of Erebor and defeat the dragon Smaug who had taken the place. There were verbal battles in Khuzdul between Fili and his uncle, who, along with his brother, insisted that they had the right to fight. After a while, it was agreed that this would be the case and they joined their uncle's group. Gandalf, the friend who started it all, told them about the user, a hobbit who lived peacefully in some mountains to the northwest, isolated in the beautiful forests of Middle Earth. No dwarf had ever seen a hobbit in his life and the brothers were no exception.

Fili, who did not believe the wizard's words, mocked the hobbit he had not yet met, saying that he was a nasty little beast.

Great was his surprise when he met the hobbit and realized that he was neither a beast nor unpleasant.
