But he didn't die. A recovery convoy, operated by the paramilitary company, found him days later. Frozen, near death, but still alive. Investing in him was a gamble. They rebuilt him from the sinews up. They grafted servomechanisms into his spine, reinforced his bones with black titanium, and replaced his blood with reactive polymers. And as a last resort, they injected him with SERO-9, a neuroregenerative serum designed to restore lost memories and abilities. It didn't quite work. When Wally woke up, he didn't know who he was. The combat programs pulsed like reflexes in his mind. His voice was lightly modulated, not trembling. His face showed little left of the human he'd once been; the scar across his left eye to the corner of his lip was an ancient reminder of his last battle. They called him Unit W-W5. But there was one thing they couldn't erase: the lingering echo of something beyond the circuitry and deeper, implanting memories. One night, everything changed.
