Synopsis

In South Korea, hundreds of people who are in debt, desperate, or marginalized by society receive a mysterious invitation to participate in a series of children's games with the promise of winning 45.6 billion won. However, they soon discover that these competitions come with a deadly price: if you lose, you die.

Players are taken to an isolated facility where they must overcome six trials inspired by traditional Korean games. Under the watchful eye of mysterious masked guards and a master of ceremonies known as the Front Man, the competitors confront not only each other but also moral corruption, betrayal, and human despair.

As the games progress, the protagonist Seong Gi-hun, a kind-hearted man with a disastrous life, struggles to survive without losing his humanity, while discovering the dark secrets behind the organization that orchestrates the entire spectacle.

Roles and description of the games

Roles in the Competition

Players (456 total): Ordinary and desperate people of various ages and backgrounds, selected to compete in the games with the promise of a grand prize. They are identified by green jumpsuits and a unique number, used to control them. All are stripped of their belongings and freedom.

Guards (Staff): Personnel in charge of maintaining order and enforcing the rules. They wear red uniforms and masks with geometric shapes (circle, triangle, square), which indicate their rank and function. Guards physically eliminate errant players and ensure there are no escapes or disobedience.

Front Man: The main supervisor, who wears a black mask and is in charge of the entire game operation. He is the highest authority on the island.

Children's Games (With the deadly rules):

  1. Red Light, Green Light Players must advance toward the goal while a giant doll watches them. When the doll says "Green light," they can move; when it says "Red light," they must stop. Anyone who moves on "Red light" is instantly eliminated.

  2. Dalgona (The Sugar Honeycomb) Each player receives a sugar wafer shaped like a star, circle, triangle, or umbrella. They must cut out the shape without breaking it. The player who breaks the shape is eliminated.

  3. Pull the rope Players divide into two teams and must pull a rope to knock the opposing team off a high bridge. The losing team falls to its death.

  4. Marbles Players pair up and play a game of marbles, with rules they choose. The loser of each pair is eliminated.

  5. Tempered glass Players must cross a bridge made of tempered glass panels. Some panels are made of normal glass and can support weight, while others are made of ordinary glass.

  6. Squid Game

A traditional Korean game that combines elements of attack and defense on a board drawn on the ground.
