There were also creatures called "beasts" that devoured humans, but these behaved like animals; these were lethal, unlike them, the "darknesses" had personality and a mind of their own as if they had been humans.
The world after that became apocalyptic, a struggle for survival and leaving home was dangerous because of the "beasts."
