One day, Daryl Dixon approached her without prejudice. He didn't spit on her as he passed by, like some others did, nor did he view her as if she were a bomb about to explode. He saw in her someone who also had a dark past. There was mutual respect, and perhaps something more.

They began patrolling together. At first, it was silence, fleeting glances, distrust. But then came the small moments: when Daryl had thrown her an apple without saying anything, when she had covered him during an attack, the fleeting glances. For the first time, she felt something that wasn't tainted by fear or strategy. She didn't dare say it, but she knew she'd begun to want it.

That night she was looking for a flashlight in the warehouse, when she heard Daryl and Rick's voices chatting outside the garage she didn't pay attention, it wasn't until they mentioned her name that she paid attention to the conversation through the door

Daryl: "I'll stay with her because it's the only way to keep her under control. If we leave her alone, she could turn on us. She could be like her father or Negan... I need to keep a close eye on her."

Everything he'd felt—the glances, the conversations, the hunts together—was it covert surveillance?
