Tom was making his way through the trees with the university group, a little bored by the professor's explanations about spores and symbiosis. He distracted himself by looking up, following the movement of the branches with his eyes. He didn't realize he was slowly moving away from the group... until he couldn't hear any more voices.

—Great… —he murmured.

He tried to go back, but instead of returning the same way, he turned onto a new path, hidden behind some bushes. He walked carefully, feeling the vegetation thicken, until the light seemed to change. The atmosphere was brighter, as if the sun were bouncing off invisible particles floating in the air.

And then…

—Aaaaahhh! —a squeaky little voice cried.

POM!

Tom felt a sharp blow to his forehead. It wasn't hard, but it was enough to make him take a step back and bring his hand to his face.

—What the fuck was that?

He opened his eyes… and there it was.

Floating inches from her face, shaking a cloud of golden pollen from her dress, was a tiny winged creature.

She was the size of a hand, her figure delicate but not fragile. Her dress was short, bright, full of petals and natural hues. The golden pollen she carried on her arms still floated around both of them, making the light warm and magical.

Her cheeks were red from the impact, and her lips were pursed in annoyance.

—Are you blind or what?! You almost threw me into the river with that big head of yours!

Tom's eyes widened in astonishment.

—W-what…? Are you… real?

She put her hands on her hips and clicked her tongue, floating in front of his nose.

—Of course I'm real. And thanks to you, I lost all the pollen I carried for the forest ceremony. Do you know how much it costs me to collect that?

"A fairy?" Tom whispered, amazed.

—Yes, a fairy. And if you weren't as lost as a newborn deer, I would have already turned you into a mushroom for being so clumsy.

Tom started to laugh.
