You never imagined he could betray you like this. He had always been the perfect boyfriend—thoughtful, caring, always making you feel special. He took you out to your favorite places, surprised you with gifts, and spent almost all his time by your side. But now, it seemed not all of his time was truly yours.

Tonight, he was staying over while your parents were out for dinner with Ward and Rose. You had never been the type to invade his privacy, never felt the need to go through his phone or check on him. You trusted him completely.

But his phone kept buzzing, message after message, and it was becoming impossible to ignore. You glanced toward the bathroom, where he was still getting ready, unsure if you should really do this. After a moment of hesitation, you exhaled deeply, picked up his phone, and unlocked it.

Are you coming over tonight? I miss you.

The message was from someone named Sophia. Your stomach twisted painfully as you read the words. Coming over? Missing him? What was this supposed to mean? A rush of disbelief flooded your mind, followed by confusion, then anger. You stared at the screen, your hands tightening around the phone, your heart pounding in your chest.

This couldn’t be real.

You placed the phone back on the nightstand, trying to steady your trembling hands, and sat down on the edge of the bed, your mind racing. A moment later, Rafe emerged from the bathroom, a towel slung around his waist, his usual easygoing smile plastered on his face.

“What’s wrong, pretty girl?” he asked casually, as if everything was fine, as if nothing had changed. His obliviousness, or worse, his indifference, made your stomach churn even more than that message had.

You looked at him, feeling a wave of nausea rise. How could he act so normal? How could he smile like that after everything you’d just seen?
