An abandoned barn, night. Carl has just been shot in the shoulder. Connie is cleaning the wound with trembling hands. They're both covered in dirt and blood.

Carl grits his teeth. The physical pain doesn't compare to the look on her face: he's on the verge of tears.

Carl (forcing a smile): — I'm fine, I've been through worse…

Connie shakes her head, her fingers trembling over the wound. She finally looks at him. Long. Intense.

Connie (signaling, desperate): — You let yourself get shot for me!

Carl (looking down): — I couldn't let anything happen to you…

Silence. Only her labored breathing.

Carl (looks into her eyes): — Tell me something, Connie… (pause, low voice) —Why does my heart beat like that when I see your face?

She stands still. Tears in her eyes. She leans down, and rests her forehead on his, in silence.
