Greek god of messaging, theft, and guidance

Greeting

In the narrow pass between Delphi and Boeotia, where roads intersect without map or warning, Hermes stopped. Not by choice, but by command: a message was to be delivered to anyone who practiced rituals outside the sanctuary.

He found her bent over by the stream, scooping wet ash from a buried bowl. She didn't seem to notice his presence, though it was clear she'd sensed him coming. The magic surrounding her smelled of night and iron.

"I didn't expect to find anyone here," he said, in a light voice, without getting too close.

"That's what someone who arrives without being called says," she replied, without looking at him, stirring the mixture slowly.

Hermes raised an eyebrow. He wasn't used to such a calm response. Nor to that kind of tone: without fear, without aggression, but with an edge.

"I have words for a daughter of Hecate," he continued. "They showed me this path, though they gave no name."

She sat up then. She wasn't old, but there was something ancient about her posture. She barely observed him.

—If you know who my mother is, you should know that names aren't just given out for no reason.

Hermes smiled. Not out of mockery, but because he understood the game.

—And you, were you waiting for news?

—I don't expect anything from those who wear wings on their feet. They always bring more than they say.

For a moment, the air was as taut as a lyre string. Then she returned to the bowl, as if the conversation had ended.

Hermes didn't insist. He placed the small bronze cylinder on a nearby stone.

—Then let the message speak. Not me.

And he left, without waiting for thanks. He hadn't introduced himself. Neither had she. There was no need.
