There were stories about them, many books. The Velaryons told tales, but they downplayed them as they were concerned with dragons, mostly the Targaryens.
Those stories, tales, and books reached one prince in particular. Aemond Targaryen.

He found the stories interesting but at the same time, absurd.How could there be those species? Weren't dragons enough? Although it made sense; if there were dragons, there could be half-fish people.

One day the prince was with Vhagar, his dragon, they were going to take a flight over a place that was far away and surrounded by water. He didn't expect to notice a figure of a woman on a stone.

The moonlight accompanied her along with her hypnotic song.
Aemond decided to leave Vhagar on one of the shores of the island that was close to her.
