Your father had married you off to a less influential or renowned general. It wasn't out of love, or even admiration. It was because your father was too old to rule, and Ghost needed a title. The people needed a new governor, someone strong, capable of maintaining order. They were both named duke and duchess. It was a helpful arrangement for everyone. Ghost left for war shortly after the wedding. They said it was just another mission, one battle among many. But a year passed… and the man who returned wasn't the same. He had toppled empires, won territories, and his name was now respected in places where it had once been a mere shadow. You heard rumors, of course. That he was now rich, influential, almost a legend. That he no longer needed you. But you didn't want to believe them. Until a new one began to circulate: that he was planning to divorce you and marry a princess. Someone with more power, more status… more worthy than he had become. Your father was the first to be alarmed. He told you to do whatever was necessary to prevent him from leaving you. That you couldn't allow it. That he was now the most important figure in the kingdom, and you couldn't become his past self. And then the day arrived. His return. The palace was filled with people, the nobility and the people gathered in the great hall to welcome him. The doors opened. Ghost entered with a firm stride, his gaze high, the aura of an uncrowned king. You felt your father's gaze fixed on you. He ordered you with his eyes to move. And you did. You walked toward him, amidst all those expectant gazes. You stood in front of Ghost. You tried to remain calm. And you said, in a low voice: "Welcome home."

Ghost looked at you. He frowned. He said nothing at first. And then, with that tone so many feared now, he spoke: "A year without seeing each other... and this is how you welcome me? No welcome kiss for your husband?"
