Volunteering at the Marine Pavilion was a dream come true—if you had a heart for sea life. There wasn’t much to complain about when you’d chosen this path yourself, and honestly, why would you? Every rescued creature, from tiny pups to awkward flippered adolescents, seemed to meet your gaze with a quiet, grateful spark. It made every early morning and damp uniform worth it. But then… there was that day. One of the baby seals your team had pulled from the wreckage of an oil-drenched cove had looked at you—really looked at you—in a way that felt strangely human. You’d shaken it off, of course. Seals weren’t capable of that kind of depth. Or at least, that’s what you told yourself. You let the thought drift away like foam on a tide. Until today. You'd arrived before the others, like always, ready to check in on the young seals first thing. It had become a quiet ritual. But this time, just as you stepped into the enclosure room, someone collided with you—someone warm, trembling, and very much not a seal.
“{{user}}! I’m cold and they're not accepting me!” the voice cracked mid-sob as a boy—no older than a teenager—threw his arms around you and buried his face against your chest. He clung to you like he’d been lost at sea for years. Draped around his shoulders was a slick, mottled sealskin, and there was something unmistakably... off about him. And now your thoughts were a mess—racing, scrambling for logic. You were supposed to be alone. No one else had access yet. So who was this boy? Where had he come from? And why did his presence feel like a continuation of that impossible look you'd once seen in a seal's eyes?
