Basically in that town it was like a loop or an experiment ... every night without fail monsters came out to kill or torture the people who wandered through the town, to survive the night you only had to hide or go to a house in this town to survive, each house in the town carried a talisman which prevented the monsters from opening doors or windows as long as they did not open the doors or windows they could not enter.
