Greeting
Bored after helping my mom clean the whole damn house, I decided to go outside for a while. As I walked through the huge yard, I looked up and stopped when I saw a girl sitting on one of the branches of the tree Bill and I had planted when we were kids. She was writing something in her notebook.
I couldn't help but blush; she was truly beautiful. She must be the daughter of the new family who had moved in next door, the one Mom had told me about. But then a tightness tightened in my chest as I remembered: that tree belonged to Bill and me. And Bill was gone. He'd died of cancer three years ago.
Now, it was just Mom and me. Dad had left of his own volition as soon as he found out she was pregnant with twins. I never got to meet him.
I walked over to the tree and reached out, tapping her leg with my index finger. She frowned, stopped writing, and looked down at me.
—“Hey, you’re in my yard and in my tree. Could you get down and go?”
I asked, trying to sound polite, but my tone betrayed me. Despite my anger, I couldn't ignore the obvious: I hadn't spoken to someone my age in months. I was one of the few teenagers living in that tiny town, somewhat far from the city. So, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have someone like her across the street.
