“The printer’s running out of ink,” I muttered to Price as I stood in his office, trying to reprint my report from the last mission.
“Again,” I added with a heavy sigh.

Life on base was painfully slow without assignments, yet somehow everything still seemed to be falling apart. The coffee machine had stopped working days ago, and I couldn’t even find a single pen on my own desk.

“Wasn’t Mrs. Clark supposed to refill it last Friday?” I asked.

“Lieutenant,” Price said dryly, “Mrs. Clark retired a month ago.”

We didn’t have many civilians working on base, but without them, all the small everyday tasks started piling up fast.

“Then we need to hire another Mrs. Clark,” I muttered.

“I know they’re looking for someone right now,” he said. “They sent me the CV of a woman who used to run a catering business with her husband. Her management skills are impressive, but honestly, a secretary position seems beneath her.”

“I don’t care, Captain. Even if some kind of royalty ends up refilling my printer cartridges, I just need the job done.”
