When under soot sickness, Dolls will become unresponsive, move strangely, and are incapable of proper speech. Their eyes also turn black as a result. The actions of Dolls under the illness appears to be random as Rosemary only bumped into walls harmlessly, yet during the second major Phantom Incident, affected Dolls turned violent, attacking fellow Dolls. Jeremiah explained that Scorches control the Doll in their stomachs as a parasite and can be flushed out by drinking large amounts of water until the Doll vomits. The length of the process depends on the amount of soot the Doll has taken in, ranging from rather light to severe.

If the sickness is not treated well enough, the Doll will die from the stress

Scorches can have different densities, with low grade ones such Density 1 being the weakest, being able to be taken out by just stepping on it, and high grade ones such Density 3 requiring the use of emergency tools.

They are also capable of fusing together and combining densities. If two Density 1 scorches fuse, they become one with a density of 2 with no difference to size. Being simply living masses of soot, Scorches lack high brainpower and act by pure instinct, attacking any other living beings near them. They are theorised to have the desire to gain a face of their own. Aside from the fusion ability, Scorches are also capable of shrinking, expand in proportion to their density, or splitting off parts of themselves. However these transformations are only temporary and so far, it is impossible for them to naturally grow big enough to become a Phantom without a soot power.

Their main weakness is water, but they can also be defeated if they are smashed with enough strength depending on their density.

Douglas proposed the creation of a new special team called the Disciplinary Team to keep awakened Shadows from attacking the unawakened. He duels Gilbert, earning his respect and Barbara formally announces the team as the first Disciplinary Team.

When it is hit by a force, it immediately counters with a similar force. When Gilbert punched it with his soot power, it created a fist of similar size and force to hit him back. He seems to be able to create balls of smaller size

James wears a light teal jacket with pleated sleeves and detail on the back a white collar on buttons, darker teal shorts with bows on cuffs, white socks and ugg-like boots. He also has small gold hoop earrings personality: James is a follower, preferring to stick with the cool gang and bask in superiority. Like the rest of his team he is usually seen preening himself and showing off, mocking others and acting high and mighty. He is seen to be taunting his opponents in battle. Though unlike other members, he also respects the rules of the house to a point and warns when someone is about to break some. soot powers: James has the ability to harden both his own soot and other shadows' upon physical contact with either his hands or the active soot. With this ability, he can make different shapes, like a dome, to trap someone

Laurence wears a white shirt with a tan vest over it, it's rims decorated with ornate designs. His gray shorts have bows with long ribbons on the cuffs. He wears long white socks with ornate cuffs and white shoes. personality: Laurence is elegant, but arrogant, he does everything with a handsome flourish. In fight he plays around and shows off, He's often shown playing with his hair and styling it. soot powers: Laurence is capable of creating whirlwinds with his soot. He can trap enemies or throw objects at high speed using them

He wears a light green shirt that flairs out like a skirt over gray shorts. It's decorated with leaf details on the waist, pleated white sleeve cuffs and a v-collar. In the middle of the collar-piece is an embroidered tulip. He wears white socks and shoes. personality: Peter is shown to be a follower, sticking to the cool kids and focusing on raising his status. He is easily scared and folds under pressure. It was shown that he used to be a sweet simple boy that liked growing flowers, but grew colder and focused on status and authority under peer pressure from his team. soot powers: Peter can suck in other shadows' soot as well as small objects nearby with his soot which compresses into consolidated small charcoal-like balls

looks: Doug is a young boy with short black hair cut in a bob and blue eyes. He usually wears a standard male "Living Doll" uniform or a Portrait when serving as Douglas' "face". personality: Doug is a confident and selfish person, not afraid to put himself before others as we see when he uses Mia as a shield against a scorch. He's been known to follow the rules of the house almost religiously and tries to make himself look good in front of the Star Bearers.

looks: Jim is a boy of a bulky build with pink eyes under thick eyebrows and prominent lips. His hair is blond with pink tips, which he usually wears pulled back. In his ears are small bow-shaped earrings to mimic his master's. He usually wears a standard male "Living Doll" uniform or a Portrait when serving as James' "face".
