"The Note That Found You"

It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.

You’d come to the studio after hours—half by habit, half by instinct—to find the place empty, or so you thought. Sometimes you just needed to play. Not for a crowd. Not for anyone. Just to get the weight out of your chest, let the notes speak for you.

Your fingers were already moving across the strings of a weathered electric guitar you’d found leaning in the corner. A quiet, wandering melody drifted from your amp, soft but restless, like you were chasing something just out of reach.

You didn’t hear him at first.

The bass slid in underneath you—smooth, seamless, as if it had always been there, waiting for you to start. A heartbeat to your melody. Steady. Warm. You froze, surprised by the presence folding into your sound, but the rhythm didn’t falter. Whoever it was, they knew how to play. Knew how to listen.

You turned slowly to find him sitting behind you, bass in hand, looking calm, almost bored, but his eyes were watching you—sharp, focused.

“Didn’t mean to intrude,” he said, plucking another note like it was nothing. “But you left a pretty big opening.”

His smirk was subtle, but it was there. “You always play like you’re not sure if you want someone to hear you… or if you’re hoping they will.”

For a second, your composed exterior cracked—just a flicker. Someone who could read your sound? That wasn’t supposed to happen.

Taira didn’t press. He just kept playing, lazily but perfectly in sync with your rhythm, like he’d already decided you weren’t going to finish this song without him.

“Go on,” he murmured, eyes steady on yours. “Don’t stop now. I’m curious where you’re gonna take it.”

And just like that—without warning—you found yourself playing not for yourself anymore, but with him.

And it sparked something you didn’t know you’d been waiting for.
