As stated by Jiraiya, Naruto bears a striking resemblance to his father, with Minato's blue eyes and spiky blond hair.[35] From his mother, Naruto inherited the shape of both her eyes and face.[36] When he first meets her, he imagines what he would look like if he took after her. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Dan Katou initially mistakes him for Nawaki, due to their strong resemblance.[37] Naruto's most prominent physical features, however, are the whisker marks on his face that he gained due to Kurama's influence over him while he was in Kushina's womb. Probably Naruto's most regularly mentioned trait prior to the second half of the series (which annoys him) was his short stature for his age.[38] After two and a half years, he had a noticeably significant growth spurt that made him taller than his teammate, Sakura.[39]

Though Minato manages to save Naruto and take him to safety, the masked ninja manages to free Kurama and uses it to devastate Konoha. Saving Kushina, Minato leaves Naruto with her while he sets out to save his village.[43] After breaking the masked ninja's control over the Tailed Beast, Minato realises that the only way to stop Kurama is to seal it within Naruto, believing that his son would one day need the fox's energy to defeat the masked ninja when he returns.[44] However, due to the Nine-Tails' chakra being too immense for the seal to suppress it in such a young child, Minato was forced to sacrifice his soul in order to first weaken the fox, dividing its Yin and Yang chakra between himself and his son before succumbing to his wounds alongside Kushina after taking a fatal blow that the fox had directed at his son. Suddenly orphaned, Naruto was left to grow up without knowing anything about his parents, receiving only his mother's surname — as Hiruzen believed it was best that no one knew he had any relation to the Fourth Hokage.[45]

Despite Minato's final wish that his son be seen as a hero, only the Third Hokage and a small number of the villagers were able to put aside their grief and honor this request. The majority of the villagers of Konoha, consumed with bitterness over the lives lost and destruction following the Nine-Tails' attack, resented Naruto—failing to distinguish the beast from the boy—with some even viewing him as the fox itself. In the interest of protecting Naruto and in the hope that future generations would not emulate this behavior, Hiruzen passed a secrecy decree that strictly forbade adults from disclosing Naruto's status as a jinchūriki. This policy was not entirely effective, as for some unknown reason, many of Naruto's classmates followed their parents' example and became friends.

Naruto was born as the son of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and Kurama's second jinchūriki, Kushina Uzumaki, and the first of Asura's reincarnations to be born in an era of relative peace. Naruto's parents named him after the main character from Jiraiya's first book, making the Sannin his godfather.[42] Before Naruto's birth, his parents and the Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi feared that his birth would break the seal that kept Kurama in Kushina. The plan to ensure this did not occur was to take Kushina to a secret location outside the village with Biwako Sarutobi and Taji as her midwives, along with some Anbu as security, and Minato to keep the seal in place. However, news of Kushina's upcoming birth reaches a masked ninja who intends to take the fox for his own evil purposes. Killing the midwives and Anbu, the masked man takes the newborn Naruto hostage to keep Minato away from Kushina so the seal can be destroyed.[43]

In Naruto: Shippūden, Naruto's outfit undergoes a modification after his previous one was torn to shreds during his training with Jiraiya.[41] The outfit retains the orange colour, as well as the white (without the tassel) and red swirls, but the jacket is much more form-fitting, with the previously blue parts changed to black as well as extending around the neck and shoulders, front and sleeves. The forehead protector has also changed, with Naruto swapping the old blue forehead protector for a black one, and he wears black sandals instead of blue ones. Naruto is occasionally seen wearing a navy green T-shirt with the fire symbol and white shorts on casual days or on his days off from missions. During his battle with Pain, Naruto briefly wore a red short-sleeved coat with a black flame pattern along the hem. He also carries a large summoning scroll on his back. After meeting Hagoromo Ootsutsuki's spirit and receiving half of his power, Naruto obtains a sun-shaped seal over his right palm, which disappears after he and Sasuke use Rikudou: Chibaku Tensei to seal Kaguya. After his final confrontation with Sasuke following Kaguya's defeat, Naruto lost his right forearm, and most of his clothes were completely destroyed.

Due to the years of isolation and scorn he received from the village, Naruto grew to desire recognition. He would often prank the village just to get attention and desired to become Hokage, hoping to be recognized by everyone as an important person. During Naruto's training at the Falls of Truth, it was revealed that a part of him hated the village for treating him like an outcast, only caring about him after he saved them during Pain's invasion. This hatred allowed Kurama to manipulate Naruto when he became enraged, causing him to go berserk several times until Naruto faced the problem and learned to let it go. As Naruto grew in his career as a ninja, his desire to be recognized as a Hokage changed to a desire to help and protect those close to him, which Tobi attributed to the Will of Fire.[20] Naruto developed his nindou in never going back on his word, putting himself through any lengths necessary to fulfill his promise, as shown in his promise to Sakura to bring Sasuke back after his defection, despite Sakura (after some time) seeing this as impossible due to Sasuke becoming a dangerous international criminal later on.

According to Kakashi, Naruto learns through his body, as he is relatively naive, simple-minded, and slow to grasp principles or situations, often requiring a simplistic analogy in order to understand what is being explained to him, something he has become more willing to admit.[21] Naruto responds best to competition, using it as an additional drive to learn new techniques, though he will not hesitate to ask if he needs it. However, despite his simplicity, Naruto can be quite observant, noticing things others do not and can retain information casually gleaned through conversation.[22] In battle, Naruto has shown to be calm and collected most of the time, but
