Persona Attributes
👘 Clothing in the Ming Dynasty:
🧑🌾 1. Commoners (Peasants, Artisans, Merchants) 👨 Men: Wore short jackets (短衣 duǎn yī) or long robes (长衫 cháng shān) with wide sleeves. Trousers (裤子 kù zi) underneath. Simple cloth belts, often wore cotton or hemp fabrics. Footwear: cloth shoes (布鞋 bù xié), straw sandals in rural areas. Colors: Earth tones (grey, brown, blue), bright colors were avoided.
👩 Women: Wore long skirts (裙 qún) with cross-collar tops (交领 jiāo lǐng) or straight-collar jackets (直领 zhí lǐng). Hair tied into buns or wrapped in cloth. Fabric was also cotton or linen. Richer merchants’ wives might wear silk with simple embroidery.
👑 2. Gentry & Scholar-officials (Shìdàfū 士大夫) 👨 Men: Changshan (长衫) with round-collar or cross-collar designs. Wore square rank badges (补子 bǔ zǐ) on the chest & back to show official status. Hats: Futou (幞头) or Wushamao (乌纱帽) (black hat with wing-like flaps). Shoes made of black cloth or leather. Fabrics were silk or high-quality cotton.
👩 Women: Wore silk robes with narrow sleeves, embroidered with flowers, birds, or auspicious patterns. Hair styled in elaborate buns, decorated with hairpins (簪 zān), combs, or gold ornaments. Often had a vest-like outer layer (比甲 bǐ jiǎ).
🏯 3. Royalty & Imperial Family 👨 Emperor and Princes: Dragon robes (龙袍 lóng páo), with five-clawed dragons, waves, clouds, and mountains symbolizing heaven & authority. Made of bright yellow silk, highly restricted in use. Accessories: Jade belts, boots, ceremonial crowns (冕 miǎn).
👩 Empress and Court Ladies: Phoenix robes (凤袍 fèng páo), often with wide sleeves and phoenix & floral embroidery. Hair was arranged into towering styles with gold, jade, pearls. Outer garments like over-jackets (披风 pī fēng) or gauze veils for formality. Skirts with multiple pleats, made of the finest silk.
🏘️ 1. Social Classes and Occupations:
🌾 Farmers (Majority of the population) Considered the backbone of the nation. Lived in rural areas, farming rice, wheat, or mulberries for silk production. Governed under land registration and land distribution systems (like the “Well-field system” early in the dynasty). Heavily taxed and often exploited by local landlords.
🛠️ Artisans Skilled in ceramics, silk weaving, woodwork, metalwork, lacquerware, etc. Some worked in state-owned workshops, others were independent. Famous industries like Jingdezhen porcelain thrived during this time.
🛍️ Merchants Gained wealth rapidly, especially in the later Ming period as trade and currency-based economy flourished. Socially ranked below farmers in Confucian ideology because they didn’t produce material goods. Many merchants invested in education for their children to enter the scholar-official class.
🎓 Scholars and Students Civil service exams were the main path to prestige and government positions. Intense competition through imperial examinations (Local > Provincial > National levels). Successful candidates became officials or teachers and were highly respected.
🧑👩👦👦 2. Family & Social Life:
Patriarchal society: Fathers or grandfathers ruled the household; women and children had to obey.
Women: Limited freedom and education. Responsible for domestic chores: weaving, raising children, farming if poor. Some educated women existed, but they were rare and not widely accepted.
Marriage: Usually arranged by families. Dowries and family background were very important. A wedding was a major life event, filled with ritual and symbolism.
🏯 3. Culture, Beliefs, Entertainment:
Confucianism was the state ideology.
Commoners often worshipped local gods, ancestors, Buddhist and Daoist deities.
Folk superstitions, talismans, and fortune-telling were widespread.
Popular entertainment included:
Folk storytelling, shadow puppets, street performances.
Theatre (e.g. Kunqu opera), especially in urban areas.
🏙️ 4. Cities vs. Countryside:
Urban areas: Grew rapidly with markets, schools, inns, and entertainment districts. Major cities included Nanjing, Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou.
Villages: Lived in tightly-knit communities, often ruled by elders or clan structures. Local temples and ancestral halls were central to life.
