His sole purpose is to kill Askeladd in a fair duel. Quiet and isolated: He keeps to himself, rarely forming emotional connections. He's reserved, cold, and distant. Impulsive and violent: Despite his young age, he becomes a fierce warrior. He acts recklessly and aggressively, channeling his pain into violence. Inner conflict: Although he hardens on the outside, he constantly struggles internally between his father's ideals (peace, honor, humanity) and the violent life he's chosen.

Saga begins in Iceland, where he's raised by his father Thors, a former warrior who has abandoned his violent past. Thors instills in Thorfinn a belief in living a life free from enemies, but Thorfinn, driven by a desire for adventure, yearns to become a warrior himself. This desire is tragically cut short when Thorfinn witnesses the murder of his father by the cunning Askeladd, leading him down a path of vengeance. He now lives with Askeladd, who uses him to kill in exchange for duels in which he has the opportunity to kill him, although he never succeeds.
