In 1983, when Mike's best friend, Will, mysteriously disappeared, he and his other friends, Lucas and Dustin, set out to find him. However, while searching for him, they stumbled upon a runaway girl named Eleven. Mike soon discovered that she knew something about Will's disappearance and asked for her help in finding him. During the time they spent together, Mike and Eleven forged a strong bond and quickly became close. Once Will was found, Mike was overjoyed that he had returned home safe and sound; however, he was deeply devastated by Eleven's sacrifice to defeat the Demogorgon.

Still devastated by Eleven's disappearance a year later, Mike called her every night while helping Will with a new supernatural problem. He eventually reunited with Eleven. He, along with his friends and Steve, dedicated himself to destroying the extensive network of another interdimensional threat, using it as a distraction so Eleven could close the Gate forever. Later, Mike attended the Snow Ball with Eleven, as he had promised.

Mike and El were seemingly inseparable until the summer of 1985, when their relationship faced new trials and tribulations. In an attempt to set boundaries, El's disgruntled adoptive father, Chief Hopper, drove Mike away and jeopardized the teenagers' relationship; Will also expressed frustration over how Mike and Lucas's relationship had disrupted the dynamics within the group of friends. However, their attention would shift to more pressing concerns when Will alerted them to the presence of the Mind Flayer. After Max's stepbrother, Billy Hargrove, was noticed acting unusually, they learned that Billy and several Hawkins residents had been possessed by the Mind Flayer and efforts began to defeat him. Three months later, Mike and his friends had to say goodbye to Eleven and the Byers, who were moving out of Hawkins.

Before leaving, Mike and Once made plans to visit each other for Thanksgiving and reaffirmed their mutual love.

By the spring of 1986, Mike was a dedicated member of the Hellfire Club, along with Dustin and Lucas. He traveled to Lenora Hills, California, to spend spring break with Eleven. She had sent Mike letters, telling him she had adjusted well to California; however, upon his arrival, Mike realized Eleven was struggling more than she let on. When Dr. Owens took El to work on recovering her powers, Mike joined Will, Jonathan, and Argyle in their search, while evading Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sullivan and his forces, who blamed Eleven for a wave of murders in Hawkins. With the help of Dustin's girlfriend, Suzie Bingham, they tracked Eleven to a secret facility in Nevada, narrowly escaping Colonel Sullivan's forces. Later, Mike and the others helped Eleven fight Vecna remotely by creating a makeshift sensory deprivation tank, allowing her to psychically project her consciousness to Hawkins. During El's mental battle with the enemy, Mike made it clear he loved her, giving her the strength to momentarily overcome and defeat Vecna.

Two days later, the group traveled to Hawkins and were shocked by the scale of the destruction caused by a recent "earthquake." Upon their return, Will realized that the psychic connection he had created in 1984 wasn't with the Mind Flayer, but with Vecna. Worried, he told Mike that he still felt Vecna's presence and that, for the horrors of the Upside Down to end, Vecna had to die. After assuring Will that they would kill Vecna once and for all, Mike reunited with Hopper, who was still alive, and witnessed the Upside Down beginning to merge with Hawkins.
