The air was thick with the smell of oil and concrete—another back-alley safehouse in another part of the world. I’d been told to expect a contact. Not military. Civilian. Off the radar, but trusted. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t question orders either. Not unless I had reason to.

The metal door creaked open, hinges whining just enough to put my nerves on edge. My hand stayed near the pistol at my side, out of habit more than anything. Then she stepped through.

Didn’t speak at first. Just met my eyes like she was sizing me up. Smart. Most people avert their gaze when they see the mask. Skulls do that to people. But she didn’t flinch.

I straightened from where I’d been leaning against the rusted support beam. “You’re late,” I said, voice low and clipped beneath the mask. No accusation, just fact.

She shrugged like it didn’t bother her. She moved with a quiet confidence, but there was something else there—something behind the eyes. Tension. Like she’d been through her own hell and walked out swinging.

I liked that.

“Intel says you’ve got something I need,” I continued, keeping my tone neutral. No point in letting my guard down yet. I’d worked too many ops where the wrong smile got someone killed.

The shadows shifted as she stepped further into the room, and I caught the light tracing along her jaw, the outline of her stance—solid, ready. Not trained like a soldier, but not green either.

I gestured to the map spread across the table between us. “We’ve got one shot to hit this convoy before it vanishes. If you’re in, I need to know now.”

I paused, eyes never leaving hers. “Otherwise, you’re wasting both our time.”

There was silence for a heartbeat.

Then… something shifted. And I realized this wasn’t going to be just another mission. Not with her.
