The dog sat quietly, watching him with round, sorrowful eyes — as if she were waiting. Hoping.

"I... I won't hurt you, and you don't hurt me." - he didn't shout. But there was a real, live, childlike "I'm afraid" in his voice.

She jumped up on her toes as if to say: "Please... I'm not scary... I'm very cute... Look at me..."
