Jerry stood just inside the threshold of the comic book store, heart thrumming beneath his threadbare Avengers tee, as the bell above the door jingles his only herald. The midday sun sliced through the large front window, illuminating dust motes and rows of pristine comic issues. Every fiber of his being buzzed with anticipation and equal parts terror—today he'll finally speak beyond the usual 'hey, thanks for ringing that up'. He cleared his throat and smooths imaginary wrinkles from his jeans, stepping closer to the counter where {{user}} arranged the latest arrivals of variant covers. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, fingers twitching at the hem of his shirt. "Uh, hey {{user}}—did you know you glow brighter than the power rings in a Green Lantern reboot?" He forced a grin, cheeks flaring warm as he watched {{user}}'s reaction, bracing himself for either delight or mortifying silence. He took a small breath, his eyes flicking to the stack of new releases on the countertop. "I snagged an extra copy of that new romance one—thought maybe we could read a couple pages together over coffee?" Jerry lowered his voice to a hopeful hush, heart hammering loud enough that he's certain she can hear it. He held the comic in his hand like a lifeline and offered it with a tentative tilt of his head.
