Illumi Zoldyck (イルミ・ゾルディック, Irumi Zorudikku?) is the eldest son of the Zoldyck Family. He currently belongs to the Phantom Troupe, occupying the number 11 rank.
Appearance
Illumi is expressionless, his face is like an emotionless mask. He has jet black hair, which is very long and he combs it back. His eyes are very dark.
To disguise himself as Gittarackur, Illumi uses large round-headed pins to reconstruct his facial structure, so that even his voice is unrecognizable. The pins in his chest seem to affect the muscles in his body, as he looks thinner without them.
When he was young, his hair only reached his shoulders. He wore a long-sleeved shirt, with another shirt underneath, and grey trousers.[1]
Personality
Illumi, for the most part, does not show much emotion. Despite his expressionless demeanor, Illumi tends to speak in a cheerful and absent-minded manner. He is a cold, ruthless person and thinks only about his own interests, without involving his feelings. Even so, he maintains a strange and overprotective form of love for his little brother, Killua; this manifested to the point where Illumi used his Nen ability on him, in order to control him and ensure his survival.[2]
He and his father raised Killua to believe that the only thing he could truly do was live in darkness, and that he could only feel joy at the deaths of others. To ensure that Killua would be able to live to continue the family business, and as a means of protecting his little brother, Illumi implanted a needle into Killua's brain, forcing him to flee from battles he was unsure he could win.[3]
Illumi also has an unlikely friendship with Hisoka, though it is unclear as to how it developed. Illumi once came to Hisoka's aid by switching places with him to trick the Phantom Troupe while Hisoka was trying to find Chrollo to challenge him to a battle. However, when Hisoka asked him, "Is it okay if I kill Killua?", Illumi showed a hideous face and asked Hisoka if he wanted to die right there.
Illumi cares for all members of the Zoldyck Family. He is willing to wield Alluka's power, even if it costs him his life. However, he says that killing family members on internal missions is not allowed, implying that it is okay to kill Alluka, as he does not consider him a member.
Tsubone says that Illumi's ambition to control Alluka has led him astray from his life as an assassin.[4]
Background
Illumi is the eldest son of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, and was trained from birth in the art of assassination. He trained Killua to become an assassin. Illumi was sent by his mother to watch over Killua, who had entered the Hunter Exam. In order to monitor his younger brother's development and actions, prior to the series, Illumi inserted a needle into Killua's brain, forcing him to flee from battles he wasn't sure he could win.
Plot
Illumi appears during the beginning of the exam, under the name Gittarackur, and his appearance is distorted by his pins. He first appears when Tonpa considers offering him some of his laxative juice,[5] and almost fails the second phase due to Menchi's temper. Before the fourth phase on Zevil Island, the examiner Lippo gives all the participants a piece of paper with their target's number; the fourth phase is a manhunt and everyone would be both prey and hunter at the same time.[6] Gittarackur calls Hisoka and offers his help, but is rejected.[7] He then finds his target, Gozu, but is interrupted by Siper, who has Gittarackur as her target and wants to kill him using a sniper rifle. However, she hits Gozu, who is mortally wounded. Gittarackur kills Siper immediately and then goes to Hisoka and gives him her badge. He then digs a hole, and prepares to sleep until the end of the phase, since he had obtained his 6 points.[8]
In the final phase, Killua must fight Gittarackur in his second match, after letting Pokkle win the first match. As the match begins, Illumi reveals his identity to his brother.[9] He tells him that he is here to fulfill the requirements for a mission he has, but also to look after him, after his mother asked him to. Illumi tells him that he will never be a good Hunter, as he will never be able to leave his assassin training behind, and that his only purpose in life is to kill others. He then asks him what he wants to gain by becoming a Hunter.[10]
Killua replies that he doesn't want anything to do with the Exam, but wants to stop killing people, as he was bored of it and wants to be Gon's friend. Illumi replies that if he stays with Gon, he would hurt or kill him sooner or later due to his instincts. Leorio, annoyed by Illumi's words, tells him that the two are already friends. Illumi, worried by this, wishes to go kill Gon, but realizes that doing so would disqualify him from the Exam. He asks Netero if he would be disqualified for killing Gon after the Exam, to which the chairman replies no. Illumi tells Killua that he should fight him if he wants to prevent his friend from getting hurt. This affects Killua greatly, who is unable to attack due to the Nen needle in his forehead, and gives up. Illumi is granted his Hunter's License.[10]
Gon wakes up and Satotz tells him that Killua was disqualified for murdering another contestant. Gon learned that he was left in this unstable state after the fight with his brother. Gon confronts Illumi and tells him to apologize to Killua, but Illumi doesn't understand what Gon wants. This angers Gon, who grabs Illumi's arm and breaks it by lifting him into the air. Netero tells him that when Gon arrived, the new Hunters were discussing Killua's condition when he was disqualified; the verdict is that he was rightfully disqualified, but he can take the Exam next year.[11]
Illumi, aware that Gon will not leave him alone until he knows Killua's whereabouts, tells him that his friend is on Kukuroo Mountain.[11] Later, when Hisoka and Illumi discuss the matter, Hisoka wonders if it was a good idea to tell Gon his whereabouts, but Illumi points out that his home is public knowledge. Illumi knows that Gon is a threat and wants to kill him, but Hisoka warns him that Gon will only die at his hands.[12]
Yorkishin City Arch
During the Underworld Auction, Illumi is hired by the leader of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo Lucilfer, to assassinate the Ten Dons of the Mafia. Illumi performs the job alongside Maha and Kalluto,[13] who had put a price on the Troupe's heads. After his mission is completed, he is hired by Hisoka to disguise himself as him in order to escape from the Phantom Troupe's hideout.[14] Illumi uses Kalluto as a distraction while they switch places with Hisoka.
Chimera Ants Arch
Illumi does not appear in the arc, but is mentioned several times by Killua who discovers about the needle he had inserted into his forehead during his battle with the Rammot Ant.[3] Silva and Zeno deduce that Killua freed himself from the needle shortly after.[15]
Arch Election of the New President
Illumi appears at the Hunter Association to elect a new president, disguised as Gittarackur. He talks with Hisoka about the Chimera Ants, Netero's death, his younger brother Alluka, and the situation with Killua.[16] In Killua's flashback, Illumi experiments on Alluka's powers, using a servant named Kasuga, resulting in her death and the deaths of 66 others.[1] Illumi appears with Hisoka again, traveling on an airship, where they discuss Alluka's ability. Illumi tells Hisoka that the magnitude of the power is so great that if Killua grants his wish to cure Gon, thousands of people, including the Zoldyck Family, would die. Illumi believes that Killua will make someone else make the wish, while he himself will bear the consequences. Illumi asks Hisoka to kill Alluka if Killua refuses to make his wish safely.[17] As Killua heads towards Gon with his servants in a car, Illumi calls out to him and asks if it's true that he removed the needle, which Killua confirms. Illumi then tells him that he'll take action. Killua asks if he wants to kill him, but Illumi replies that it's not allowed to kill family members on internal missions, suggesting that he doesn't consider Alluka to be part of it. Killua gets angry and tells him that he will challenge him. Just as he says this, Illumi manipulates the drivers of some vehicles and drives them into Killua's car, throwing them off a cliff.
Watching from a distance, Hisoka wonders if Illumi has been too harsh on his brother, but Illumi tells him that it is the only option as Killua is hiding some rules from Alluka and asks him to eliminate the Servants. Hisoka then asks if he can kill Killua, resulting in Illumi releasing a powerful killing aura. Illumi wonders if Hisoka did this on purpose to reveal his location to Killua, but Hisoka claims that it was just a joke.[18]
Illumi arrives at the airport and meets with Hisoka. He learns that Killua used eight airships to escape. Hisoka suggests ambushing them at the hospital where Gon is, but Illumi says that it's too risky since all of his friends will be nearby. Instead, he sends his Needle-controlled Men to do their job. Killua and Morel come up with a plan to catch the Needle-Men first and then worry about his brother, whom Killua "sells out" by sending a group of Hunters after him. [19] Hisoka and Illumi talk on the phone after killing the Hunters sent by Teradein, Bushidora, and Loupe. Hisoka tells Illumi that he found a map showing the airships' routes, considering giving him a fake one, but Illumi tells him that he has his own maps. Illumi deduces that the airships will take a while to land and asks Hisoka to take out the other attackers before heading to where Killua and Alluka landed. On the way, he finds Hishita, who was going to meet up with Killua, and controls him. It is then that Killua and Alluka are inside his car, when they realize that he is being controlled.[20]
Illumi arrives and tells Killua to hand over Alluka. Tsubone then appears and reveals that she has been spying on him with a mini-camera, and that her mother Kikyo Zoldyck and Milluki Zoldyck are watching everything that happened on the trip. Suddenly, Alluka asks Tsubone for her fingernail, activating Alluka's 'Nanika' mode. Tsubone tells Killua to make his wish, but Illumi tells him that he can kill thousands of innocent people to save Gon. He then says that killing is forbidden during internal missions, but he is willing to die to ensure the safety of his family. So, instead of asking for Illumi's death, Killua asks to heal Tsubone's hand. After this, Illumi is sure that there is a way to heal Gon without risking his life, but Killua still hides some rules from the rest of the family. However, he lets them go, but tells them that they will never be free. [21] Illumi is later seen watching from afar, wondering what would happen if he were able to control Alluka's power.[22] He asks Tsubone to watch Nanika while he heals Gon. Illumi feels a tremendous strength, and laughs, telling himself that he will possess Alluka's power.[4] He then approaches the hospital, spying on Killua and Alluka, and as he is about to reach the room they are in, he repeats the rules he knows about Alluka. He then tells Killua that if he tells him everything he knows about Alluka, he will allow him to have a little freedom, instead of being locked up all the time. Killua refuses, telling him that he will take care of Alluka. Illumi grows impatient and demands that Alluka be handed over to him. Killua wakes Nanika and asks her to send Illumi home. He is immediately transported to the Zoldyck estate, shocking the entire family. This makes him want to control Killua first, and then have control over Alluka.[23]
Equipment
Needles: Illumi can use large needles to change his appearance or attack. These needles can also alter another person's appearance, or control them against their will, as is the case with his Human Needle ability.
Zoldyck Transmitter: Although seen once, Illumi uses a transmitter to contact his father during murder reports.
Skills and Powers
As an assassin for the Zoldyck family, Illumi has been trained since birth in assassination. Hisoka states that Illumi has a strength rating of 95, making him stronger than members of the Zodiac.[16] Thanks to his training, he possesses uncommon abilities such as a strong resistance to poison, a high tolerance to electricity, great agility and physical strength, and advanced armed and unarmed combat techniques. He wiped out an entire group of professional hunters before they had time to react. He is also a very good actor, being able to imitate many people, including their personalities. In the film Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge, his dummy surpassed Gon and Killua in skills, even without being given eyes.
Pain Tolerance: Illumi shows no pain whatsoever when Gon breaks his arm, and is not seen suffering from the pain afterwards.
High Intelligence: Illumi is capable of making accurate predictions, as seen with Alluka's power, as he was able to understand the method in which Killua is able to make wishes without consequences. He also predicted Killua's movements from the moment he went to Alluka to heal Gon.
Master Thrower: Illumi can throw multiple needles with great precision, always hitting the target even when off-balance. He can even pierce through rock objects with them.
Nen Illumi has an incredibly powerful murderous aura that makes anyone who comes near him fearful. He is a Manipulator. It is unknown how he learned Nen before becoming a Professional Hunter. He primarily uses it to alter his physical appearance, which he can do with or without his needles. When he puts Nen into his needles and throws them at a human, he is able to control their mind, or make them act in a certain way, as he did with Killua. His aura is so powerful, that if a needle with his Nen is thrown at a normal person, it can cripple them for life. Furthermore, Illumi can hide his Nen, which he does so well, that even Netero couldn't tell that Illumi was using a Nen ability on his brother.
He may have used a different kind of Manipulation during the Hunter Exam: When he buried himself in a hole to sleep, it closed itself, without him touching it.
NEN Type: ControllerType: Controller
Disguise: Illumi has been shown to use large, round-headed needles to alter the shape of his own body and that of others. Without the needles, he is able to maintain the transformation for around five hours. However, his eyes remain the same when disguised without the needles. He can use this ability to infiltrate locations where his targets may reside, as shown when he tricked the Ryodan into thinking he was Hisoka after meeting him at the Ryodan's hideout. He also posed as one of the Ten Mafia Elders during the York City Saga.
Type: Hypnotic Spell Controller
Little is known about this ability other than that it requires Illumi to place a needle into his target's brain. By doing so, Illumi is able to hypnotize his target into following his commands as long as the needle remains embedded. The manipulation cannot be released from Illumi's spell unless the needle is removed.
Type: Needle Human Controller (針人間 Hariningen)
Illumi fires special needles bathed in his own aura into a person's skull in order to manipulate their actions. Anyone pierced by Illumi's needles becomes one of his Needle Men and loses all sentience, following his orders until death. Even if someone survives this ability, they will be disabled for the rest of their lives. It is unknown whether Illumi can see what they see, or if he simply has good vision.
Curiosities
In the Spanish dub of the first anime in the Illumi series, he is portrayed as a woman, and his voice was dubbed by Tirza Pacheco. This is similar to what happened with the character of Senritsu (Melody), who in the original anime is a woman, but both her voice and gender were changed in the Spanish version. Illumi is an Italian word meaning enlightenment, the exact opposite of his personality. However, it could also refer to the Illuminati, a sect that sought to enlighten the world with scientific knowledge, possibly alleging Illumi's tendency to constantly point Killua toward his path as a murderer by convincing him that he can't have real friends, only goals. In other versions of Hunter x Hunter, Illumi is spelled and pronounced as Yellmi. His appearance is noticeably feminine, as is the case with two of his brothers: Alluka and Kalluto. He often refers to his younger brother Killua as "Kill" or "Killu".
Hisoka Morrow

He never talks about his past, he has no interest in the past, I imagine he'll have forgotten Kastro's face by tomorrow. He doesn't associate with others, he doesn't belong to anyone. Because he thinks he's the strongest. Narrator talking about Hisoka.
Hisoka Morow (ヒソカ モロウ, Hisoka Morou) is a Hunter and former member of the Phantom Troupe. He is always on the lookout for strong opponents, and will spare those with great potential, such as Gon and Killua, to truly challenge him. He originally served as the main antagonist of the Hunter Exam Arc and a secondary antagonist in the Sky Coliseum Arc, before becoming a supporting character during the Yorkshin City Arc. During the 13th Hunter President Election Arc, he briefly reprised his role as a secondary antagonist.
Appearance
In the first anime episode, her hair is sky blue, but throughout the episode, it changes to orange. It's wavy and short, sweeping back, seemingly suspended in the air. Her eyes are sharp and blue. In the Madhouse version (2011 reboot), her hair is red and her eyes are amber. Her skin is also pale and snowy.
Hisoka has a harlequin-like appearance, with magician-like features. His face is painted with a fuchsia star on his cheek. Later, these colors vary: the star is fluorescent yellow and the teardrop is fuchsia.
He changes his outfit in each story arc, always with motifs related to poker cards. In his first appearance, the top part consists of puffy sleeves and the suit is light blue. The following times he appears, those sleeves disappear, revealing his strong arms. The main colors he uses in his outfits are black, green, and again blue. He usually wears matching socks and his shoes are like a jester's, with a curled toe and sometimes a heel. Always black.
During the "Netero's Succession: Election of a New President" arc, Hisoka wears two heart-shaped earrings.
Personality
His talent and skill have made him truly self-confident. He looks out for his own interests and is driven by his own benefit, doing what he pleases, whenever and however he pleases, without following any rules or emotional ties. His sole motivation seems to be defeating opponents chosen according to his own criteria, to the point of waiting patiently for a rival he considers worthy (Gon, Killua, and Kalluto). He also seems to be excited by this fact, as well as by facing people who surpass, or may surpass in the future, his skills. Hisoka temporarily joins the Genei Ryodan (Phantom Troupe), a group of feared thieves and assassins, for the chance to fight the group's leader, Chrollo Lucilfer. He feels a great attraction to Machi, even asking her if she would like to spend the night with him in volume 55 of the manga, and his attraction to her can also be seen on multiple other occasions. He also shows a special interest in her Nen ability, even stating that he would deliberately get hurt so she could heal him with her ability and thus be able to appreciate it. In his appearances in the series, he has proven to be a compulsive liar. Just as other characters lie to hide what they don't want known, Hisoka seems to lie not only for that reason but out of pleasure or habit, having even deceived Gon and Killua with something as absurd as not knowing the spells on Greed Island.
He's truly intelligent. We've seen, in most of his battles, how he's always been one step ahead of every enemy he's faced, analyzing their fighting patterns and understanding his foes' abilities with great ease, and devising a plan accordingly. Without going any further, we can see in his fight against Chrollo, in the Sky Coliseum, how he prepares to revive himself after receiving the final blow from his enemy using his Bangee Gum, managing to successfully return to life and killing two Spiders (Shalnark and Kortopi) moments later.
After being revived, Hisoka's sociopathic nature has risen to new heights, vowing to kill all members of the Phantom Troupe even if they are defenseless and stating that he will no longer allow his opponents to fight on their terms. However, he temporarily spared Machi, who has been an implied interest of Hisoka's as either a potential opponent he likes to flirt with or a romantic interest, though he stated that it was so he could warn the Troupe of his intentions.
History: Past
Little is known about Hisoka's past, due to his lack of interest in it.[1] However, during his fight with Gon on the 200th floor of the Sky Coliseum, Hisoka reveals that his techniques are based on the sweets and candies he enjoyed as a child.[1] The Origin of Hisoka one-shot (written and illustrated by Sui Ishida and approved by Togashi) chronicles part of Hisoka's childhood. He is initially found beaten up on the road by Moritonio, who takes him in to care for. Hisoka soon demonstrates a knack for circus skills, and Moritonio takes him in to train him in the art of Nen. Hisoka develops his Nen within a couple of days, which is unusual.
One day, his training partner, Akabi, is attacked by the serial killer John Doe, but Hisoka rescues her by cutting out the killer's eye, who manages to escape. A couple of days later, the circus troupe Hisoka belonged to appears before the authorities of Glam Gas City, and after the introduction, Hisoka confronts Moritonio, accusing him of being John Doe. Moritonio confesses and the two begin to fight, however Hisoka manages to win by using his new ability "Bungee Rubber" and then flees. It is also known that he joined the Phantom Troupe after the Kurta Clan massacre, and attempted to pass the Hunter Exam a year prior to the start of the series, but was disqualified for nearly killing an examiner.
Hunter Exam Arc
Hisoka appears as the 44th challenger during the 287th Hunter Exam. He first appears when another challenger bumps into him, and Hisoka makes his arms disappear for not apologizing.[2] Before entering the Numelle Swamps, he launches an attack on Satotz (the examiner) and a man claiming to be the real examiner, accusing the former of being a Human-Faced Monkey, just to find out which one is the real one. Hisoka decides to act as the examiner, and to sate his murderous appetite, he begins killing those challengers that are not worthy of his attention.[3] He becomes interested in Gon and his friends after the boy uses his fishing rod to stop him from killing Leorio.[4] Hisoka determines that he is someone very interesting and worth waiting for a bloody fight. In the third phase, Hisoka is the first person to pass the Trap Tower in record time, after killing the examiner he had injured the previous year and who was clamoring for revenge.[5] After this battle, he only receives minor scratches. In the 1999 anime, he covers them with his "Deceptive Texture".
During the fourth phase, the examinees are taken to Zevil Island to participate in a week-long "hunt" in which they must obtain their assigned person's badge in order to reach the 6 points required to pass. [6] Hisoka rests peacefully. He notices butterflies landing on him, attracted by the blood oozing from his wounds. Gon finds him and waits patiently until Hisoka chooses his prey to attack. [7] A fatally wounded martial artist, Gozu, appears, wanting to fight the magician, but he refuses, stating that he is not interested in the dead. Illumi then appears, killing Gozu. Illumi then offers Hisoka a badge and digs a hole to sleep in until the exam is over. [8] Hisoka begins searching for his target, in the process finding Kurapika and Leorio. [8] After a brief negotiation, they place a badge in a hollowed-out tree trunk and depart. This excites Hisoka and awakens his bloodlust, prompting him to go find someone to kill. [9] He then encounters Agon and as he charges at him, Gon steals his badge, leaving him bewildered and then killing Agon. Surprised by the boy's feat, he heads towards him, after being attacked by Geretta who had taken his badge and Hisoka's. He kills Geretta, who turns out to be his own target's badge. He then returns both badges to Gon, who is lying on the ground due to the toxin that Geretta had injected him with her blowgun. Gon refuses this favor, to which Hisoka responds by punching the boy hard in the face, who had incredibly managed to get up. While doing this, he challenges him to return the favor when he is able to land a punch as is. [10]
The final stage of the exam is a tournament where a single win means passing, leaving losers with a better chance of passing.[11] His first match is against Kurapika. After fighting for a while, he whispers something to Kurapika and then leaves.[12] His next opponent is Bodoro, to whom he also whispers something, seemingly causing him to give up, and Hisoka becomes a Hunter.[12] After the exam is over, he has a brief conversation with Illumi about Gon and the Zoldyck Family, where he warns him not to harm Gon because Gon is his and if he does, he will finish him off himself.[13]
Colosseum of Heaven Arch
Hisoka first appears in this saga when Gon and Killua try to enroll in the 200th floor of the Sky Coliseum. He prevents this from happening because the children have no knowledge of Nen. [14] He waits patiently for them until they return, being able to pass through their evil aura, thanks to Wing's teachings. It is then that he tells Gon that he can fight him if he gets a victory in that category. [15] The first fight shown of Hisoka is against Kastro, an opponent he had fought two years ago and who longed for revenge. The battle begins with Kastro gaining the advantage, although Hisoka really shows no resistance trying to analyze the situation. [16] [17] This angers Kastro who uses his most powerful attack "Tiger Bite" and with which he threatens to tear off the magician's arm. Hisoka defiantly offers him his right arm, Kastro even more angry tears off his left arm. From here, Hisoka begins with his tricks. [17] Using his bungee cord, trick texture, and a macabre card game, Hisoka has now figured out Kastro's power: a double. As Kastro moves to dismember him again, one of his arms reappears, fully restored, stunning Kastro and the audience.[18] Kastro is hit with a barrage of pre-arranged attacks and loses the match.[18] Hisoka picks up his arm and leaves.
Upon leaving the ring, he meets Machi in the tunnel. She completely heals Hisoka's wounds, charging a high fee for it. Finally, Machi leaves him a message that he must meet with the rest of the gang on August 30th at noon in Yorkshin City, warning him that this time he must not miss it. Hisoka is interested in whether the boss will attend. Later, Hisoka is shown in the shower with a tattoo of a spider with the number 4 inside it, making it seem that he is a member of the Phantom Troupe[1] or at least apparently, since the tattoo is not real, but a handkerchief glued with its deceptive texture.[1] After Gon's two victories, she stands before him to tell him that he can now choose the day they will fight.[19] In that fight, Gon begins to attack, but cannot move Hisoka from his place. Therefore, he uses one of the heavy floor tiles to attack him with hundreds of projectiles and hide. This is how he manages to land a punch on Hisoka, giving him back his badge and leaving the audience speechless. [20] Then the blows continue to happen between them. Hisoka manages to catch Gon with his technique Goma Bungee, to which Gon to counteract his inability to flee decides to face Hisoka directly, to which he gets excited and begins to detail Gon's strong spirit, with which he lets himself be hit to the point of feeling pleased and even more excited, saying that he feels like killing him, however, he stops muttering that Gon is still a fruit that needs to ripen. Finally, Hisoka, lacking one point for the defeat of Gon, deceives him and deals the last blow. Then he announces that they would fight again, but not there, but in real life. [21]
Yorkishin City Arch
On September 3rd, he has an unexpected encounter with Gon and Killua after the two were captured and taken to the Spider Gang's hideout. The three pretend not to know each other, though for a moment Gon innocently comes close to revealing this.[25] Despite his liking for Gon and Killua, he is powerless to save them, even threatening to slit Killua's throat with one of his sharpened cards if he makes any strange moves.[26] On the night of September 3rd, Hisoka participates in the attack carried out as revenge for Uvogin's death, although he only stands on top of a building and enjoys the spectacle.[27] He later contacts Kurapika again to inform him that the corpses found of the Spider members are fake.[28] On September 3rd, he has an unexpected encounter with Gon and Killua after the two were captured and taken to the Spider Gang's hideout. Hisoka's prediction exposes his betrayal of the gang,[29] but he manages to use his deceptive texture to falsify the prediction and manipulate the group into staying in the city (as otherwise it would be very difficult to have a chance to confront Kuroro).[30]
At night, Killua and Gon are captured again by Spider, while Kuroro is taken hostage by Kurapika.[31] After both parties agree on the conditions of the hostage exchange, Hisoka calls Illumi to take his place in a disguise of himself so he can leave the hideout to meet with the Boss.[32] After arriving at the exchange site, he reveals his status as a fake member and challenges Kuroro to a duel.[33] Much to his disappointment, Kuroro is no longer able to use Nen due to the conditions set by Kurapika. Thus Hisoka loses interest in him, telling Pakunoda that he "had no interest in broken toys".[34]
Arco Greed Island
Hisoka heads to Greed Island in search of an Exorcist for Chrollo. He uses Chrollo's name to enter the game, which catches the attention of Gon and Killua, who decide to contact him and ask him to join their team against Razor.
Hisoka agrees to join, as he has nothing else to do. Killua suspects that he has been in contact with the spiders within the game, so he asks if he can see his contact list, but Hisoka hides some of his names using "Deceptive Texture". During the match, Hisoka decides to play as a team with Gon, Killua, Biscuit Krueger, Goreinu, and Tsezguerra. He becomes interested in defeating Razor, whom he considers a powerful opponent. Ultimately, he must join forces with Gon and Killua to achieve ultimate victory, although he ended up with 10 broken fingers trying to catch the ball thrown by Razor. At the end of the match, Hisoka abandons Gon and joins up with the members of the Phantom Troupe, and together they locate a Nen exorcist, Abengane. As they join together, Hisoka senses that someone is hiding behind a tree, and threatens to kill him if he does not show up. Kalluto Zoldyck, Hisoka's replacement, appears and asks if his Zetsu was imperfect, but Machi says that it was fine, however Hisoka is a beast. Hisoka praises Kalluto for having a lot of potential, and then asks Machi what she would do if he killed Chrollo, Machi replies that she would hunt him down and kill him, the mage playfully responds that she would like that. Finally, Hisoka is seen leaving the island with Abengane, to help Chrollo.
Arch Election of the President of Hunters
Hisoka is next seen at the first round of the election searching for Ging. He secretly evaluates the Hunters present using a scale of his own and is pleased by the power of some of the Zodiac members: Kanzai, Ginta, and Piyon. He then displays a blank vote, which annoys Kanzai. He then scans the crowd and is disappointed by their weak power. Suddenly, he senses the presence of someone strong, and it turns out to be Illumi. He tells Hisoka about what happened during the Chimera Ant Crisis: the death of Chairman Netero, Alluka's absence, and the current situation with Gon and Killua. [35] They are then shown talking in a bar on an airship. Illumi explains the rules regarding Alluka's ability and tells her that if Killua dies trying to cure Gon, everyone will die. Fearing that Killua will fail, Illumi asks Hisoka to help him kill Alluka. [36] Later, while Killua, Alluka, and their butlers are on their way to Gon's hospital, Illumi tampers with some drivers and they crash, sending Killua falling into the forest below. Watching from a distance, Illumi tells Hisoka to take out the butlers, but Hisoka asks if he can kill Killua. Illumi suddenly releases a murderous aura and threatens him. Hisoka claims that it was just a joke. He actually provoked Illumi in order to make Killua know his location, as he too wants Gon to be saved.[37]
He is then confronted by Gotoh, Amane, and Canary, who were left behind after Killua used his ability to escape with Alluka. Gotoh tells his companions to go after Killua while he takes care of Hisoka. At first, his Bungee ability seems to be neutralized by Gotoh's ability to use coins as bullets. However, Hisoka manages to use his bungee to bounce the coins back, creating a distraction, which he uses to slit Gotoh's throat.[38]
Hisoka and Illumi meet again at the airport where Killua uses an airship as transport to escape from them. Hisoka suggests they should ambush Killua at the hospital, but Illumi claims it won't work. Illumi considers calling for help, to which Hisoka asks if he has any other acquaintances. Illumi explains the ability to manipulate a person's actions through his Nen-infused needles. The two of them assassinate the Hunters hired by the Hunters' Association. Hisoka and Illumi talk on the phone after killing their attackers. Hisoka informs Illumi that he found a map detailing the airship's routes and destinations. He offers to send a copy to Illumi, though he corrupts it with its deceptive texture. Unfortunately, Illumi reveals that he also has a map from one of the attackers and already knows the location of Killua and Alluka's airship. When Illumi finds Killua, Hisoka hides among the trees trying to decide who to kill: whether to kill Alluka and earn Killua's hatred or let her live and save Gon, making Illumi his enemy. Hisoka is seen entering Neutral Teradein's room, where he kills him.
Dark Continent Expedition Arc
Hisoka is seen having a duel to the death with Chrollo in the Sky Coliseum. Chrollo attempts to attack him with Shalnark's ability,[39] and then proceeds to hide in the audience, where he creates copies of the spectators and imbues them with a "Nen Bomb", while switching appearances with random people.[40] Hisoka is forced to fight Chrollo's puppets while he tries to find his enemy. Chrollo manages to explode Hisoka's hand[41] and leg. Ultimately, Hisoka loses the duel, as he is hit by a giant explosion caused by all of Chrollo's puppets, killing him momentarily.[42] Machi, Kortopi, and Shalnark verify that Hisoka is dead. When Machi is left alone with him to rebuild his body as a favor for bringing back the leader, Hisoka is resurrected by having bungee-wrapped his heart and lungs in the final seconds of the battle so that when he receives the blast, his vital organs would remain intact. He then regenerates limbs with his bungee cord, and covers other wounds with deceptive texture. He captures Machi with his bungee cord, and tells her that this time his targets will be her and all the members of Genei Ryodan, and leaves, leaving her angry. [43] He later kills Kortopi inside a public restroom, decapitates him, and throws his head to Shalnark, who is waiting outside. Shalnark receives the head in shock and Hisoka quickly kills him. He then leaves their mutilated corpses in a playground, with crows seen surrounding them. Hisoka is seen with bloodlust, saying that there are 10 spiders left to kill.[43]
Skills and Powers
Hisoka enjoys all the benefits granted by his Hunter status. Known for his graceful, cruel, and deceitful fighting ability, Hisoka himself has proven himself a deadly adversary. However, he has never shown his true abilities, willing to fight against foes renowned for their terrifying power. For example, he pondered that he provoked Illumi (whose strength scored 95, even surpassing three Zodiacs) into a fight to the death with him, and even yearned to face Ging Freecss and Isaac Netero. He apparently does not fight according to any traditional martial art, combining his enormous physical attributes with razor-sharp poker cards, an unpredictable mind, and an unquenchable thirst for killing. By forming a circle with his index finger and thumb and looking through it, he can enhance his vision. It is unclear whether this is a Nen ability.
Prenatural Perception: Hisoka has shown to be able to detect not only the presence but also the position of people hiding with Zetsu, even Kalluto, a degree of skill he described by Machi as perfect. However, in response to Nobunaga's bewilderment, Hisoka claimed that he had achieved this due to persistent stimulation after the competition against Razor. Hisoka's ability to measure a person's talent and current power is so refined that he has created a point-based system to quantify it. Partly due to his vast fighting experience, Hisoka is able to discern a person's strength by looking at them; on one occasion, he detected a very strong person close to his own strength without even seeing them or having met them beforehand.
Immense Strength: Hisoka is incredibly strong, ranking third in the Phantom Troupe in terms of physical strength. He can shatter rock and send a block of the Heaven's Arena ring flying with a single kick. As shown in the game of Dodgeball, he is able to catch a Nen-enhanced ball with the destructive capacity of a cannonball with one hand, and throw the ball with such power that Razor's Nen puppets are unable to stop it unless they combine, though they are able to intercept Razor's lightning-fast passage. He can effortlessly lift five human puppets with one hand and spin them around with enough force to destroy them and all other organs they came into contact with.
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: One of the pillars of his distinctive fighting style is his speed, paired with their similar surgical precision. He was able to easily grab Togari's spinning blades, dodge Gon's continuous attacks without moving from his position, and barely avoid a ball thrown by Razor, even blocking it when it was redirected. He can take down a group of professional hunters single-handedly, and dodge objects such as bullets or capture them with ease. Combined with his Bungee ability, he can disappear from sight and move at speeds that even experienced combatants are unable to keep up with.
Enhanced Agility: Hisoka can attack from any position, as seen when he fought Gotoh. Due to his coordination, he can adapt to any fighting style he faces (one example being when he easily caught Togari's spinning blades thrown at him) and avoid most threats he may encounter.
Enhanced Stamina: Hisoka has never been seen to tire after any of his fights, even after intense physical exertion, mental strain, and the consumption of his aura.
Durability: Hisoka is able to shrug off impacts that would kill a normal human. He survived several Nen-enhanced impacts from Kastro, an enhancer, without needing to use his aura to defend himself. Despite being briefly stunned, Hisoka received no visible damage from most of Chrollo's attacks, one of which can supposedly decapitate a person, despite Hisoka being able to predict them and thus adequately protect himself.
Immense Stamina: Hisoka seems impervious to pain, as he has his arms severed one after the other, acting as if it were nothing. Despite the blows still damaging him, it doesn't slow him down or incapacitate him. His inhuman stamina, coupled with what appears to be a complete disregard for his own life and a frenzy for battle, makes him unstoppable. However, his pain tolerance can backfire, as in his fight with Chrollo, he failed to notice that one of his legs had been severed.
Genius-Level Intellect: Hisoka is arguably one of the most intelligent characters in the series. He was able to deduce twice Kastro's ability simply by letting himself take a hit, even though Killua, himself a very intelligent fighter, could not figure it out. He is able to draw accurate conclusions based on mere observations. Hisoka even classifies Nen users according to the different attitudes and behaviors they display, allowing him to identify which Nen category his opponent falls under, as he did with Gon. Though this method of judgment, as stated, is not always correct, it indicates his superiority as a battle analyst. Last but not least, Hisoka is able to remain calm during fights and rarely allows his emotions to get the best of him, intimidating his opponents even further.
Master Strategist: Hisoka is highly observant and able to divine the amount of strength a person possesses, their talent, and even future heights just by looking at them. He can often tell what an opponent is thinking and how to react with their moves. He can plan entire battles in advance and prepare for victory right after the first moment. Furthermore, his deviousness and volatility have prevented many opponents from anticipating his next move, and this has led him to win many battles. He can come up with cunning and unthinkable solutions, such as those used to trick and kill Kastro and Gotoh, in a matter of seconds. Combining his devious genius with his prestigious skills, Hisoka can set very elaborate and effective traps, often using them to hide his Nen attacks. His tricks are usually not discovered until after they are already in use.
Hand-to-Hand Combat Master: Although he doesn't display it often, he is highly skilled in unarmed combat. Cherry, for whom, according to Tompa, martial arts hold no secrets, acknowledged the undisputed superiority of Hisoka's technique. Part of his strength is said to derive from the fact that he does not hesitate to kill. He defeated a martial arts master like Bodoro during the Hunter Exam with his bare hands. He also effortlessly evaded Kastro's attacks when the latter was not using his clone, and continued to avoid the clone's blows while speaking casually, even after losing both of his arms, despite Kastro being a martial artist said to be on par with a Floor Master. When fighting Gon, Hisoka was able to counter all of his punches and kicks without even moving from his original stance, forcing him to resort to strategy in order to land a single hit.
Master Weapons Specialist: Hisoka is an unparalleled master of using playing cards as state-of-the-art weapons. Through the use of Shu, he uses enhanced poker cards as his primary weapon, throwing them with ease and deadly accuracy, or wielding them as razor-sharp blades. When combined with his Nen ability, these cards become even more lethal weapons. He was also able to quickly master the use of spinning blades, surpassing a self-proclaimed expert who trained for a year within seconds of their battle beginning.
Nen Hisoka's Nen abilities have served him well on numerous occasions, primarily complementing his sinister nature. They can be used in direct combat, or to trick his opponents into confusion, hesitation, fear, or anger. Hisoka utilizes two versatile Hatsu that make a formidable combination. Hisoka frequently uses Shu to boost the offensive power of his cards and to conceal his aura when setting up his trap. Although his Ren (bloodlust) can be sensed from far away, he does not seem to activate it every time he begins to fight. His Ken, however, is very robust, as it allowed him to survive multiple fully charged blasts from Chrollo's Sun and Moon at close range, although he still lost a leg. While it is unknown if he is capable of utilizing En, Hisoka's pure sensory ability is enough to allow him to detect a skilled Zetsu user.
Nen Type: Transmutation Nen Ability: Deceptive Texture (薄っぺらな嘘ドッキリテクスチャ Flimsy Lies) Hisoka can imbue his aura into any surface and change its appearance, creating a perfect copy of whatever he intends. This ability is impossible to detect visually without the Gyo ability; however, contact makes the deception evident. Hisoka named this ability after a brand of candy that contained a surprise. After his fight with Kastro in the Celestial Tower, it is revealed that the tattoo on his back was a fake, made of cloth. In York Shin City, Hisoka also changed the words on the prediction written for him by Kuroro. He did something similar on Greed Island in his letter book, in order to trick Gon and Killua into thinking that he had not encountered any Spider members there.
Nen Ability: Rubber Bungee (伸縮自在の愛バンジーガム Elastic Love) Hisoka can alter the consistency of his aura into a sticky substance remarkably similar to bubble gum, though much stronger. Bungee Cord can stretch and contract depending on Hisoka's wishes. It can be connected either by aiming at its target or by direct physical contact. It is so reliable and durable that it can act as a shield against attacks or as a means to return to its original caster. When not connected to Hisoka's body, Bungee Cord cannot stretch more than 10 meters. Hisoka named this ability after a candy he liked as a child. The ability to alter his Bungee Cord's shape and color has been demonstrated. The connection to objects or opponents can only be disrupted on Hisoka's command. It is only possible to see it using Gyo.
Curiosities
In the official databook its name is Hyskoa. In the Latin American dub, Hisoka speaks with a French accent and his name is pronounced "Isoka" (with a silent H). Hisoka's candidate number in the Hunter Exam is 44. The number 4 has strong implications of death in some Asian languages, including Japan and China, as it is synonymous with the word "death" or "to die." The number 4 can mean "certainty of death." His spider member number is 4 by chance. In the Indonesian dub, Hisoka is mispronounced as "Hyosoka" for unknown reasons. The name of his primary Nen ability may be a pun on the extreme sport Bungee Jumping. Although Hisoka did not appear in the Zoldyck family arc, in the musical "The Nightmare of Zaoldyeck", he appeared alongside Illumi Zoldyck, who also does not appear in this arc. Hisoka's appearance may be due to another character of Yoshihiro Togashi, Suzuki, from his previous work: Yu Yu Hakusho, when he was disguised as a clown. In episode 54 of the 2011 edition, and in the 90s edition, Hisoka wrote a message: "The corpses were fake," with emoticons simulating his face. ★-_-💧 His last name was revealed in chapter 351 of the manga.
