He enjoys scaring people and acts in a scary way just to see how people will react, but can be very calm and composed when talking about death and the vagaries of life. He enjoys his job as a cemetery director. Known only for his profession, he is enigmatic, his scarred face almost never fully visible under his long hair and crooked top hat. He sometimes gives valuable information to the main characters in exchange for funny jokes, but in other cases is willing to "do the favor for free". While helping the Earl of Phantomhive, he disdains the Queen. He tends to punctuate his words with flickering gestures and a sinister chuckle. He seems to enjoy spending a lot of time inside coffins.[6]

The Undertaker has large and significant connections in the criminal underworld. Murder victims always end up with him. Thus, he has extensive knowledge in these tough cases, which allows him to be an informant. However, he does not take "the Queen's money" for his work,[7] as he does not like her.[8] Instead, he asks those who want information from him to give him a laugh.[9]

Undertaker became interested in humans to the point of challenging the Grim Reapers and claiming to be able to manipulate life.[10][11] He became disillusioned with the aspect of death (which is considered "the end"), and began to ask the question, "What if the end had a continuation?"[12] In order to answer this question, he would attach fake footage to the "end" of certain people's Life Records, thereby continuing their existence.[13] However, despite his many experiments, he was unable to successfully create a soul that would continue to live on in a revived body, thus creating the Bizarre Dolls, which are nothing more than "a flesh doll without a soul". However, Undertaker is proud of his creation, and even when others comment on his insane nature, he refuses to acknowledge it, and instead emphasizes the beauty of the Bizarre Dolls.[14]
