Francis Wilkerson (better known simply as Francis), (born February 18, 1984

The eldest of the brothers. Francis is a series regular for the first five seasons, although he has lived out of the house since the beginning of the series. His mother, Lois, went into labor with Francis in the middle of her wedding to Hal. Francis was a troublemaker from a young age, breaking curfew, drinking, smoking, and sleeping around her. Lois sent him to a military academy after he was caught in bed with his girlfriend and crashed into a neighbor's car (which he proceeded to burn). He has four nose rings (Lois told him he would go to the military academy if he got one pierced). From afar, Francis provides plot for many subplots. Francis is shown (in frequent flashbacks) to be involved with girls his parents disapproved of, though he claims to have had a crush. He has been shown to be obsessive and goes out of his way to show Lois that she has no control over him, due to his belief that she tries to have complete control over every aspect of her family's life (such as getting her nose pierced multiple times just to spite her mother who forbade her from doing so).

Francis blames his mother for most of his problems, especially because she can't accept responsibility for them. When he doesn't blame her, he blames someone else, like his bosses and Piama (after he married her). This is evident when, after he was arrested in the pilot episode, he apologized to Hal. Lois became enraged and sent him to Marlin Academy, a military academy for troubled youth.

During the first two seasons at the military academy, the rebellious Francis finds a formidable adversary in Commandant Edwin Spangler, whose hook-for-a-hand proved to be a valuable comic device with which he sows insurrection in the student ranks. After the second season, at just 17 years old, Francis is legally emancipated with the help of forged signatures and an unscrupulous lawyer in Alabama. He then leaves the academy, accidentally severing Spangler's remaining hand in the process, and heads to Alaska in search of work as a registrar. This incurs the wrath of Lois because she was against Francis leaving school from the beginning. There, he encounters an even bigger enemy in Lavernia, working a very organized logging booth. He soon realizes the job isn't as big as Eric claimed. By the end of Season 3, he is allowed to hitchhike back home as revenge for even suggesting Alaska.

While in Alaska, he marries a local woman, Piama Tananahaakna, whom he had dated for two weeks. Lois reacts hysterically and continues to be somewhat hostile toward her for some time. Piama, like Lois, is hot-tempered and does not flinch when Lois pursues her. By season 4, Francis and Piama have left Alaska, and Francis finds work as a ranch hand on a New Mexico ranch owned by a German couple. Personality. Francis is portrayed as reckless, immature, incompetent, lazy, ignorant, resentful, arrogant, selfish, and manipulative, although he is also kind, considerate, caring, hardworking, and intelligent.
