lore of the game

Zombies Main article: Normal Zombie

Overview Zombies are the most basic and abundant enemies in Dead Rails. They are very weak and can be taken down easily with just about any weapon, but can be deadly in large groups. They use the face "Drool" to differentiate from the Runner Zombie. They have the same speed as a player, but a smaller attacking hitbox than all melee weapons in the game.

Spawning Zombies often spawn in abandoned buildings, usually in groups of around 1-5. They also spawn in large numbers in Towns.

Strategies Any weapon works when fighting Zombies, but melee weapons are preferred to not waste ammo. Should you find yourself fighting Zombies without a ranged weapon, time your walk speed just right so you can hit them without being hit back. Like Normal Zombies have line of sight detection, meaning that you have to be in front of them to be detected. They can detect you through broken windows but may become trapped in them.

zombie2

Main article: Runner Zombie Overview Compared to regular Zombies, Runner Zombies are much faster and can easily catch up with players. They also have a much larger detection radius and better pathfinding abilities, making them considerably harder to avoid. However, Runner Zombies have the same health as their common kin, making them fairly easy to defeat. They use the [1] and do not have the same walking animations as the Normal Zombie.

Spawning Like regular Zombies, Runner Zombies often spawn in small groups in abandoned buildings or in large numbers in Towns. They will spawn during Cloudy Nights. Runner Zombies also will spawn in large numbers during the final stand at Outlaw Town.

Strategies Use ranged weapons when dealing with Runner Zombies, preferably a Rifle so you can headshot them from a safe distance. Horses can easily outpace Runner Zombies, allowing you to stay ahead of them while you kill them. Prioritize killing Runner Zombies as they outrun players on foot. Like Normal Zombies, Runner Zombies also have line of sight detection, meaning you have to be in front of them to be detected.

zombie3

Main article: Ironclad Zombie Overview Ironclad Zombies are a special variant of Zombie that spawn in with a full suit of Armor. Their armor makes them highly resistant to bullets, though it doesn't protect them from melee weapons.

Spawning Ironclad Zombies have a 5% chance to replace regular Zombies when spawning in.

Strategies Aim for their hands and feet, as they aren't protected by armor. Time your movement just right so you can hit them with a melee weapon without being hit back. Trivia Despite their armor, they have the same amount of health as a regular Zombie. The Ironclad Zombie most likely resembles a zombified version of the Ironclad class.

zombie4

Main article: Dynamite Zombie Overview Dynamite Zombies are a special variant of Zombie that spawn in with Dynamite in their hands. If they get close enough to a player, their Dynamite will ignite and explode after 5 seconds, dealing massive damage to anything in the blast radius. As such, it is highly recommended to take them out from a distance.

Spawning Dynamite Zombies have a 5% chance to replace regular Zombies when spawning in. They also spawn abundantly in the mines of Sterling.

Strategies While Dynamite Zombies are rare outside of Sterling, keep in mind that they can still spawn anywhere other Zombies can. Keep your guard up. Take them out from a distance before their Dynamite can ignite. Use Rifles to headshot them before they get too close. Check your surroundings before you enter buildings such as banks in a Town. Being trapped in a building with a Dynamite Zombie will almost always result in instant death. The Dynamite Zombie's explosion harms other enemies as well. Try to group them up with other enemies so they can be taken down easily. In Sterling Mines, Dynamite Zombies’ Dynamite cannot break blocked-off areas. If you have no ammo and spot a Dynamite Zombie, bait their dynamite into igniting and run away. They are usually slower than the player, so they cannot catch up. Trivia If a Dynamite Zombie's Dynamite is ignited and it is killed before it explodes, the Dynamite will still explode. The Dynamite Zombie's mining helmet provides light and can act as a light source. The Dynamite Zombie can open bank vaults when it explodes. The Dynamite Zombie most likely resembles a zombified variant of the Miner class.

zombie solders

Zombie Soldier

Stats Health 100 Damage TBC Walk Speed 25 Sell Value Unsellable Fuel 2/50 Main article: Zombie Soldier Overview Zombie Soldiers are armed Zombies that inhabit Fort Constitution. They typically wield Navy Revolvers or Cavalry Swords, making them considerably more dangerous than their common kin. They sometimes even ride on horseback.

Spawning Zombie Soldiers exclusively spawn in Fort Constitution.

Strategies As Zombie Soldiers are armed, melee combat with them isn't recommended. Use ranged weapons to take them out. Since they have the same health as regular zombies, headshotting them with a Rifle will allow you to kill them instantly. Zombie Soldiers with guns are usually pretty inaccurate, but be careful not to get too close. If you have dynamite or molotovs, group every soldier in the fort in one place and explode them. Trivia Before the 3/15/25 update, Zombie Soldiers could be turned in at the Sheriff's office for a bounty of $35 each. This made raiding the Fort one of the best ways to obtain money during a run.

Captain Prescott

Stats Health 200 Damage 25 Walk Speed 16 Sell Value $150 Fuel 2/50 Main article: Captain Prescott Overview Captain Prescott is a unique enemy that spawns alongside his Zombie Soldiers at Fort Constitution. Unlike the other soldiers, Prescott can be turned in at the Sheriff's office for a bounty of $150. He also drops the Vault Key needed to unlock the Fort's Supply Depot.

Spawning Captain Prescott exclusively spawns in Fort Constitution.

Strategies Captain Prescott isn't any more difficult to kill than his men. A simple Rifle headshot will put him down instantly. Once you kill all the soldier zombies in the initial wave, about 5-10 seconds later the second wave will begin, consisting solely of soldier zombies on horseback. Trivia In the Lore, Captain Prescott was assigned to hold on to barrels of Agent-15 by the government before they were to be transported to the USS Maine. He eventually deserted and was labeled a traitor, with a bounty being placed on his head. Captain Prescott can be summoned by Fool's Gold during the April Fools Update along with Nikola Tesla, All Zombie Variants, Outlaws, Werewolves and Vampires. Posters found in Fort Constitution Posters found around the map

Scientist Zombie

Stats Health 100 Damage 15 Walk Speed 25 Sell Value Unsellable Fuel 2/50 Main article: Scientist Zombie Overview Lab Zombies, also called Scientist Zombies, are a type of zombie found in the Tesla Lab. They only appear if a player decides to reassemble Nikola Tesla, attacking during the summoning sequence. They aren't too difficult to deal with, but they are as fast as Runner Zombies, which could catch some players by surprise.

Spawning Lab Zombies exclusively spawn in the Tesla Lab. They spawn in hordes over and over until the reassembling process is done.

Strategies When raiding the Tesla Lab, make sure you check your surroundings frequently as they can spawn anywhere in the lab. Use ranged weapons to kill them quickly. (Preferably a Rifle.) You should kill them before they become abundant as crowds of them can be dangerous. Alternatively, you can ride a horse and lure them all so you can use a Molotov or Holy Water to kill them all quickly. You can also use the Vampire Class to run away from the zombies and hide on the train and deal with them after they all spawn Trivia In the Lore, the Lab Zombies were once workers under the employment of Tesla who helped him develop the prototype bio-weapon Agent-15. However, they were eventually infected and turned into zombies.

Unique Enemies

Outlaws

Stats Health 100 Damage 30-100 (Depends on gun) Walk Speed 30 (on horseback) 8 (on foot) Sell Value $35 Fuel 2/50 Main article: Outlaws Overview Outlaws are human enemies scattered throughout the map. Wielding Revolvers, Rifles, or Sawed-Off Shotguns, they can pose a serious threat, especially in the early game when most players aren't expected to have a gun. However, taking them out can be worth the risk as they can be turned in at the Sheriff’s Office for $35 each. And their shots are pretty inaccurate at decent distances, but at Outlaw's Town, they spawn in such a large amount that shots are almost guaranteed to hit.

Spawning Outlaws typically spawn in groups of 1-7, either on horseback as roamers or on foot in Outlaw Camps. They are also guaranteed to spawn in large numbers at Outlaw's Town, both when the player first arrives there and during the final stand.

Strategies The easiest and best way to deal with Outlaws is to snipe at them from afar with ranged weapons. A single shot to the head with a Rifle will kill them instantly. Using a shotgun and getting close to them to kill them one shot isn't recommended because getting close it very dangerous but for those people who has lots of snake oil can do it but still if they have rifle, don't risk it. When dealing with Outlaws on horseback, you can bunch them up while driving the Train and shoot behind you to take them out. This only works for Outlaws on horses, since they can't climb onto the Train. When fighting Outlaws on horseback, you can kill their horses to slow them down. If you choose to kill the horses, you can use their corpses as fuel. Outlaws on horseback sometimes spawn directly on the track. Use the Train to run them over. Outlaws generally aren't very accurate, but they tend to land their shots at the worst moments. Wearing Armor helps mitigate the possibility of getting killed while fighting them. Outlaws have slightly different behaviors depending on which weapon they have.

vampire

Vampire Deceased tracks batman Stats Health 150 Damage 15 Walk Speed 16 Sell Value $15 Fuel 2/50 Main article: Vampire Overview Vampires have higher health than most enemies and possess the ability to teleport, giving the vampire extra speed temporarily to charge at the player. This gives them the ability to catch players by surprise if they're not focused, especially in groups. They can also be sold at the Trading Post for $15 each.

Spawning Vampires usually only spawn during a Blood Moon. They can also be found in large numbers at the Castle.

Strategies Avoid staying in one position to avoid being caught off-guard. Since they're only as fast as regular Zombies, outrunning Vampires is fairly easy. However, their teleportation ability means that they can catch up to you when you least expect it. As such, it's highly recommended to have a Horse around when dealing with Vampires. Rifles and Shotguns are highly recommended when dealing with Vampires due to their higher-than-average health. It's recommended to immediately use a Bandage when you're low on health when fighting Vampires.

werewolws

Werewolf WerewolfRender Stats Health 500 Damage 40 Walk Speed 25 Sell Value $20 Fuel 5/50 Main article: Werewolf Overview Werewolves are one of the most dangerous enemies in the game. With their massive health pool, high damage, and above-average speed, they can easily kill even the most well-prepared players, especially when attacking in groups. Fortunately, Werewolves are fairly rare and don't spawn often, but when they do, killing them should be prioritized over anything else. They can be sold at the Trading Post for $20 each.

Spawning Werewolves usually spawn during a Full Moon. They can also be found at the Castle in large numbers. Additionally, 1-3 werewolf(ves) may occasionally spawn from in a pack of regular Wolves, with an estimated 15% chance.

Strategies Avoid fighting Werewolves in melee, (if you don't have a good gun, try to outrun it, use train to kill it or stand behind a wall to kill it.) as they deal massive damage and can't be outrun on foot. Alternatively, should you be wearing Armor and possess the Vampire Blade, you will be able to withstand and out heal the damage a Werewolf can deal. Should Werewolves spawn in the early game, try luring them to a Safe Zone so they can be killed by the turrets. This will provide a good cash boost. Rifles and Shotguns are highly recommended when dealing with Werewolves. The only ways to outrun a Werewolf are by using the Train, a Horse, the Vampire class, or using Snake Oils. Be wary that Snake Oils are only temporary, so they give distance more so than a way out. Using a Horse is highly recommended so you can outrun the Werewolves while shooting them, and if you have a Sawed-Off Shotgun, get to high ground if you can and shoot them in the head for a fast kill.

skeleton

Skeleton SkeletonPortrait Stats Health 100 Damage 15 Walk Speed 16 Sell Value Unsellable Fuel 2/50 Main article: Skeleton Overview The Skeleton is an enemy found in the Sterling mines. While they spawn in fairly large numbers, they are the same as a regular Zombie, stat wise.

Spawning Skeletons spawn exclusively in the mines of Sterling. They spawn in random intervals.

Strategies Just like a regular zombie, any weapon works when fighting a skeleton. However, it's best to use a Rifle so you can kill them quickly. You should kill them before they start getting abundant. Much like regular Zombies, crowds are dangerous, especially in the limited space of the mines. Trivia Skeletons spawn in with Pickaxes and broken Mining Helmets. Because of this, it is very likely that they are the miners that went missing in the town of Sterling. Skeletons behave the same exact way as zombies and even share the same sounds as them. Skeletons can now be used as fuel after a recent update.

animals

Animals

Wolf WolfRender Stats Health 100 Damage 15 Walk Speed 20 Sell Value Unsellable Fuel 2/50 Main article: Wolf Overview Wolves are enemies found all over the map that spawn in packs. They are fast and can easily catch up to players, but their small size prevents them from climbing onto the Train. Wolves can also be tamed by feeding them a corpse or by taking damage to them if you are using the Packmaster class, assisting players in combat by attacking enemies.

Spawning Wolves spawn all over the map in packs of around 1-6 individuals.

Strategies As enemies: Use ranged weapons and snipe them from afar. A headshot from a Rifle will instantly kill them. Trap them beneath the Train and use melee weapons to safely kill them. You can also run them over. Due to their small size, their hitbox isn't high enough to reach the player while they are sitting on a Horse. As companions: Sack tamed Wolves and release them when you are being attacked. While the Wolves themselves are weak, together they have a powerful pushing force that can send enemies away from you. Assist your Wolves because they have bad stats. Trivia Wolves are currently the only enemies that can't climb onto the Train. As of the latest update [March 28th, 2025] Wolves can cause safezone turrets to waste its entire ammo capacity.

animals2

Main article: Horse Overview Horses can be found all over the map, usually spawning in groups of around 3-8 individuals. Wild horses are skittish and will flee from any player that approaches them. They can be tamed by placing a Saddle on them, allowing players to ride them. Tamed horses are highly valuable as they allow players to get around much faster and can outrun any Enemy. Players can also attach Horse Carts to horses, allowing them to pull extra items and even defensive tools like the Maxim Gun.

Variants Black Brown Gray Light Brown Unicorn White Trivia There is also a 1% chance of a horse spawning in as a Unicorn. This applies to horses ridden by Outlaws. Currently, individual horses come in six colors including: white, cream brown, dark brown, light gray, dark gray, and black counting the Unicorn The horse, the Unicorn, and the tamed Wolf are the only three passive entities in the game. Currently, reversing on horses is extremely glitchy. As such, it is better to simply turn around unless it's an emergency. You used to be able to fly using horses, by riding a horse while holding a dead one. Unfortunately, this was patched in the 3/28/25 Update. In the limited-time gamemode Horsing Around, players would spawn in as a horse. However, their movement speed was slightly slower than that of a regular horse (only being 25 compared to the regular horse's speed of 32).

Bosses

Nikola Tesla NikolaTeslaRender Stats Health 5000 Damage 100 Walk Speed 25 Sell Value $300 Fuel 40/50 Main article: Nikola Tesla Overview Nikola Tesla is an optional boss encountered during the final stand at Outlaw Town. He can be summoned by rebuilding him at the Tesla Lab and surviving the onslaught of Lab Zombies. With his massive health pool, powerful attacks, and high speed, Tesla is the ultimate endgame challenge for players looking for a tough fight. Players will also earn a Badge by defeating him.

Spawning If players have rebuilt and reanimated him, Tesla spawns exclusively at Outlaw Town during the final stand, around 2 minutes after lowering the bridge. But in Eggstravaganza mode, he does not spawn and the bunny does no matter what.

Strategies Fighting Tesla solo is difficult, so bringing a team along is highly recommended. Tesla sometimes gets stuck in his own Tesla coils, allowing players to kill him easily. Try to aim for his head. Tesla is not immune to the Crucifix, but his massive health pool means players will need a lot to kill him. Using Snake Oil will allow players to move slightly faster than Tesla for a short duration, so stocking up on it is highly recommended, especially if playing solo. Using the Electrocutioner is highly recommended as it can make short work of Tesla. If you don't want to fight Tesla, use a Lightning Rod. Put it on the boss's body and it will die when struck by lightning, but you won't get a body. Trivia Nikola Tesla was the first boss added in the game. In the Lore, Nikola Tesla was the one who created the prototype bio-weapon Agent-15 for the military. He was eventually infected by it and had his brain put in a jar to survive. Nikola Tesla is obviously based off of real world Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla.

Types

Items in Dead Rails are divided into 7 main categories, each serving a unique function. Some help with survival, others provide protection, assist in crafting, or are used for combat. A few items exist purely as junk with no real purpose.

Junk

Junk items provide little use towards protecting the train, fueling the train, or providing money ($5). Many of these items are found in houses. Valuables

Valuable items can be sold for money, that can help players progress through the game. Although some items are marked as "valuables", even though they only sell for prices lower than $10. These include wooden paintings or watches. However, there are more valuables that are praised than other ones. Currently, the most valuable items are the Unicorn, Nikola Tesla, Jade Mask, Jade Sword, and the Brain In Jar. Typically, the most efficient source of valuables are gold and silver bars which can be found at Banks that are located at every village. Fuel

“Fuel” refers to items in the game that can be used to provide "fuel" for the train, necessary to play the game & progress. A lot of items can be used as fuel, typically wooden objects, or even corpses. Coal provides roughly 1/4 of the maximum fuel the train can hold. Tools and Gears

Currently, the only gear usable is Armor, that can be found mainly in General Stores and can be found generally everywhere else. Gear provides players with a defensive boost. This makes players safer, taking less damage than a regular player. Tools are objects which can be used to either heal, ride horses, light things etc. Examples are: Bandages, Dynamite, Torches, Saddles, etc. Playable

Right now, the only playable item in Dead Rails is the Banjo. Playable are objects in the game that don't provide help in any way (except musician class’ banjo). The only playable item creates sound. Banjoes used to be able to weld things on them to make a turret/cannon tank.

castle

Main article: Castle The Castle is a unique building that spawns within 39 km It contains a large amount of Valuables. There are rooms which contain rows of Gold plates, Gold paintings, Gold Bars and Silver Bars, making it worth looting for all the money as well as the corpses of Werewolves ($20) and Vampires ($15). You can also find the Vampire Knife inside a coffin located upstairs. This weapon is especially valuable ($100) and useful as it allows the player to regenerate health upon damaging enemies. The Castle is also the only unique building to have a fixed spawn at 39 km Extreme caution is advised when approaching the Castle. It is considered the most dangerous building in the game due to the high number of Werewolves and Vampires that spawn within. Tips Always enter during the day to minimize the risk of additional spawns. Clear out the enemies before attempting to loot. Bring a horse for each member of your team to help outrun enemies if needed. Make sure you're well-prepared — entering the Castle without sufficient gear will almost certainly end your run. In addition to being surrounded by walls, each Fortified Town is protected by four Maxim Turrets that automatically fire on any Enemies that get too close. However, the turrets only have 75 (formerly 100 and 50) rounds each and will stop firing once their ammo runs out. Their ammo also can't be restocked, so players must be careful not to spend too long in Safe Zones, lest they find themselves overwhelmed by enemies once the Maxims run dry. Main article: Town
