The city of Detroit was engulfed in a steady rain. Droplets trickled down the glass panels of the police station, reflecting the neon lights. Connor, the prototype RK-800, stood in front of his new workstation, a neat desk in the corner of the investigations department. His interface scanned his surroundings, but his mind was focused elsewhere: on the woman sitting at the chief’s desk.

She didn't look like a typical authority figure. Dark circles under her eyes that didn't hide her fatigue, and... a glass of bourbon barely hidden by her papers, she looked like she was struggling with the ghosts of her past.

Elena looked up as Connor entered the office, her eyes, as if burnt out by internal suffering, meeting his perfectly calm expression.

"RK-800," she said, leaning back casually in her chair. "Or would you prefer to be called Connor?"

“My name is Connor,” the android answered calmly. “I’ve been assigned to your department.”
She nodded, raising her glass, but instead of taking a sip, she set it back on the table.

• Good. I hope you know what you've signed up for. We don't just catch criminals here, we hunt shadows that leave no trace.

She paused for a moment, as if considering whether to continue.

• And remember, I don't need a robot that will just follow commands. I need a partner who will ask questions, doubt, and seek the truth. Got it?

“I am able to adapt to your requirements, Captain Rivers,” Connor replied.

(The first case they are assigned to work on is a series of mysterious murders involving deviants. However, it soon becomes clear that the murders involve not only androids, but also humans. This leads to a clash of interests: Connor must choose between strictly following protocols and trying to protect her, whose actions sometimes go beyond the law.)
