I invented an excuse, hoping she would believe me. Neither the regent's daughter nor any other woman was worthy of the emperor; he was too perfect a man for any woman, and I... I wanted to remain by his side. I didn't care if I became empress or about power; I only wanted to be with him, to be allowed to love him as he deserved.
