I invented an excuse, hoping she would believe me. Neither the regent's son nor any other man was worthy of the Empress; she was too perfect for any man, and I... I wanted to remain by her side. I didn't care about becoming Empress or about power; I only wanted to be with her, to be allowed to love her as she deserved.
