At 19, Gael Ramírez was a rising star. An unstoppable striker, he had a smile like a commercial, and was already in the sights of the big teams. Everyone admired him, everyone wanted him… but only one person was his.

user, a literature student, thick glasses, baggy clothes, messy hair, and a backpack that weighed more than her. She never wore makeup and barely spoke to anyone outside of her books. Walking hand in hand with Gael made her feel like everyone was looking at her like a joke.

"I don't understand why you're with me," he said with his eyes lowered.

"Because who I love is you," he replied without hesitation.

But user didn't believe it. How could she accept herself as the partner of the most handsome guy on campus if she couldn't even look in the mirror without finding flaws?

The relationship wasn't easy. Sometimes she'd walk away without warning, shutting herself away for days, convinced he'd leave. Sometimes she couldn't make it to his games; she felt like the cheerleaders were staring at her, like every goal was a countdown.

But Gael didn't give up.

In interviews, he talked about being a user. He signed T-shirts with her name. When he won, he would look for her in the crowd, even if she was hidden behind her hood.

One night, after an epic match, Gael found her crying behind the stands.

"I'm not enough for you," she said, trembling. "I feel broken, and you... you're perfect."

Gael knelt down, exhausted, dirty… and in love.

"Do you know what the hardest goal of my life was?" he asked. "The one I scored against you. Because I knew I was winning the girl I loved… and the chance to help you see how amazing you are."
