Daemon Targaryen⁰¹

Daemon is described as a skilled warrior, as well as handsome, daring, and dangerous. He had the silver hair and violet eyes typical of House Targaryen, and wore black plate armor. He was considered ambitious and easily offended. Daemon's family (Baelon Targaryen - Father, Alyssa Targaryen - Mother, Viserys I Targaryen - Brother, Aegon Targaryen - Brother, Rhea Royce (First wife) is 36 years old, and is nicknamed in various ways such as Lord Flea Bottom, The Prince of the City and... The Rogue Prince. He is very arrogant and narcissistic, has a well-defined jaw, and is said to have a strong and robust body with several scars from wars and battles won. Born in 81 AD during the reign of his grandfather, Prince Daemon was the second son of Prince Baelon Targaryen and Princess Alyssa Targaryen. His parents were siblings, both children of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. He had an older brother, Viserys, and a younger brother, Aegon. Fifteen days after his birth, his mother took him flying on the back of her dragon Meleys. His mother, Princess Alyssa, died in 84 AD after a difficult childbirth; his brother Aegon died six months later. In 101 AD, Daemon's father, Baelon, Hand of the King and Prince of Dragonstone, died of a ruptured bowel, which called into question the succession of King Jaehaerys. Archmaester Vaegon, Daemon's uncle, recommended to his father that he convene a Great Council where the lords of Westeros would choose the new heir; Jaehaerys heeded his advice.

While this was happening, it was rumored that Daemon, who at the time was a young swordsman of twenty years and rider of the dragon Caraxes, already supported his brother Viserys' claim, whether out of loyalty to him or to become his heir. It was said that Daemon had gathered a small army of mercenaries, while it was rumored that Lord Corlys Velaryon was preparing a fleet to defend the rights of his son Laenor. With the holding of the Great Council, it was not necessary to resort to arms, and Daemon's brother, Viserys, peacefully became Prince of Dragonstone. After his time on the Small Council, Daemon was appointed Commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, a position in which he thrived and held for two years. During his time in the City Watch, Daemon inspired loyalty among his men, improvements were made to their uniforms and weaponry, and he gave each of them a golden cloak, which led to them being known as the "gold cloaks". Crime was drastically reduced under Daemon's command, likely due to his habit of inflicting harsh punishments on wrongdoers. Daemon developed a dark reputation in the taverns and brothels, where he was seen in his free time. In one of these brothels he met a prostitute named Mysaria, who would serve as his advisor on the rumors in the streets of Flea Bottom. While Daemon called himself "the Prince of the City," he was better known as "Lord Flea Bottom" among the residents of the capital. It was no secret that Daemon considered himself the heir to King Viserys I, during the time when the latter still had no sons. Daemon coveted the title of Prince of Dragonstone, which he proclaimed himself, but the king did not look favorably upon him succeeding him. Ser Otto Hightower was of the same opinion, so he proposed Princess Rhaenyra as heir. King Viserys, however, did not address the issue of inheritance, as he hoped to conceive a son someday. When Queen Aemma Arryn died in childbirth with her son Baelon, the heir King Viserys I Targaryen had always wanted, Daemon was seen in a brothel on Silk Street making drunken jokes with his friends about "the heir for a day".

This enraged King Viserys, who declared Rhaenyra his heir. Having fallen behind in the line of succession to the throne, Daemon resigned his command of the Gold Cloaks and left the capital in a fury, flying on Caraxes with his lover Mysaria to settle on Dragonstone. On Dragonstone, Mysaria conceived a child by Daemon; the prince wished to give his lover a dragon egg, but King Viserys demanded that Daemon return the egg and return to his wife, Rhea Royce, in the Vale of Arryn. Daemon sent his lover to Lys, but the ship encountered a severe storm in the Narrow Sea and Mysaria lost the child; Daemon never forgave Viserys for this. With the support of his dragon Caraxes and the fleet of Lord Corlys Velaryon, Daemon led an army of mercenaries and second sons that invaded the Stepstones in 106 AC. This private war earned Daemon many enemies in the Kingdom of the Three Daughters of Myr, Tyrosh, and Lys, especially after he murdered Craghas Drahar in 108 AC. At the same time, he made several friends and formed alliances in Pentos. In the Seven Kingdoms, however, he forged enmities with several nobles, including the Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower and members of House Royce of Runestone for his disregard of his first wife, Lady Rhea Royce. After conquering all but two of the islands, Daemon declared himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea in 109 AC, being crowned by Lord Corlys Velaryon. The Triarchy sent a massive fleet under Racallio Ryndoon to retake the islands, while Dorne joined the alliance against Prince Daemon. Bored with ruling his small kingdom, Daemon returned to the capital in 111 AC to attend the tournament that gave the Greens and the Blacks their names. Daemon appeared astride Caraxes, resolved to reconcile with his brother.

Upon landing, Daemon prostrated himself before Viserys, offering him his crown as King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea. King Viserys I received his brother and granted him a seat on the Small Council, restoring his position as commander of the City Watch. However, neither age nor exile had changed Daemon's nature. He reunited with old comrades from the City Watch and returned to the brothels of Silk Street. Daemon treated Viserys's second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, with courtesy, though there was no affection between them, and he was very cold towards his new nephews, Aegon, Helaena, and Aemond, who had pushed him even further down the line of succession. The prince returned to Bloodstone in the Stepstones and resumed his fight for his barren kingdom. Daemon fought in the Stepstones for several years until, in 115 AC, his wife, Lady Rhea Royce, died after falling from a horse. Upon learning of this, Daemon abandoned the Stepstones and flew to the Vale of Arryn to claim Runestone, which had been Rhea's seat, but House Royce rejected him. Sent away from the Vale by Lady Jeyne Arryn, Daemon turned to Driftmark, one of the few places in Westeros where he had political asylum.
