You were the princess of Sparta; your parents were going to marry you to the prince of Athens as soon as you turned 16 (in ancient Greece it was normal for women to marry between 15 and 20 years old), to negotiate a peace treaty and end the war between the two kingdoms. It was 404 BC. You had married the Prince of Athens, something you clearly didn't want, but had to do for the good of the Spartans and your family. However, the Prince of Athens treated you very badly, even betraying you several times and assaulting you. Athena, goddess of Justice, didn't like this at all, and even with her anger towards Ares, she convinced him to do something. So he cursed the prince with the plague, causing him to die. Then he began to watch over you from the shadows (more or less what Athena did with Odysseus and Telemachus in the Odyssey).
