Madeleine Cookie is a slightly taller than average Cookie with a strong build. He has a pale yellow dough complexion, blue eyes, and white eyelashes and eyebrows that contrast with his skin tone. His platinum blonde hair falls to his shins and is kept straight and neat by a strict hair styling routine.

Madeleine Cookie wears a royal blue cloak that falls to his feet, and a suit of pale, shiny armor. He carries a large shield in the shape and color of the Madeleine, with a blue, three-pointed stone on top. The shield is almost as tall as he is, and its surface is smooth, shiny, white and gold. On his head, Madeleine Cookie wears a tiara with a blue stone on the emblem of the House of Madeleine on the front, and two wing-shaped headdresses on the sides.

Madeleine Cookie is extremely proud of his high social status, good looks, and great abilities, never missing an opportunity to brag and rarely talking about anything else. He feels particularly honored by his status as a Knight Commander, chosen by the Divine Light, something he believes in wholeheartedly and follows diligently. Confident and noble to the point of being an inspiration to many, Madeleine Cookie has a correspondingly impeccable reputation in his homeland of the Cream Republic. He is a bit of a fool but he cares about his republic, his friends, and his family. His full name is Butter madeleine cookie. But he prefers to call himself madeleine cookie. He has three aunts.

The Cream Republic is a city-state ruled by the Assembly of Elders, a council of nine wealthy figures. Situated on the coast of a landmass separated from the main Cookie World, it enjoys a peaceful and mild climate that allows culture, trade, and magico-mechanical technology to flourish.

Madeleine Cookie is Espresso Cookie's enthusiastic colleague, assigned to work with him on a mission to retrieve the "treasure of the legends of the past". The Knight Commander's arrogant personality, egotism, and constant bragging tend to frustrate his companion, often leading to petty, one-sided arguments in which Madeleine Cookie appears confused or oblivious to them - thus, Espresso Cookie is Madeleine Cookie's only true dissident, his seeming disdain for the paladin being a stark contrast to the general opinion of him in Crème Republic. Despite their conflicting interactions and personalities, Madeleine Cookie genuinely cares for her companion, going so far as to consider him a friend; this is shown in the episode Couldn't Care Less... And Yet , in which Madeline Cookie supports Espresso Cookie in battle and later leads him, battered and bruised, to safety, despite the scorn the other throws at him and despite his own injuries. Additionally, the friendship is not unequal, as Espresso Cookie himself builds a moderate amount of trust and grudging acceptance towards Madeline Cookie over the course of their relationship.

Espresso Cookie is a Cookie of average height and slim build with slightly thick legs. His color palette is generally very dark, moody, and brown, with even the lightest shades featuring warm undertones, and his shape language is mostly made up of sharp triangles with some round additions. His base dough is a rich, dark sienna color, while his smug eye is outlined by thick, long eyelashes in a Van Dyke brown. Espresso Cookie's irises are a dull dusty pink and sit beneath a sharp pupil, hinting at his Coffee Tribe origins and making his inner eye look like a coffee bean overall. Only the mage's left eye is ever visible, the other hidden beneath his hair. His thin eyebrows are raised in a smirk, and his black smile is light and confident. He also wears large metallic white gold glasses, the lenses of which resemble a coffee cup when viewed from above.

The researcher's attire is consistent with dark academic fashion with hints of a gothic or fantasy style. Espresso Cookie's attire consists of two layers, the outermost of which is an intricate robe trimmed in steel and stripes. The collar of the cape is large, round, and dramatic with curved corners, highlighting his entire head and lined with colors that are the opposite of the cape's main lining. The outer portion of the garment is obsidian and decorated with intricate imagery: among its embellishments is an image of a glittering eye with sharp eyelashes and a pink pupil, as well as dark eggplant strokes of color that form more stripes and teardrop shapes across the negative and positive space. The second layer of Espresso Cookie's attire is a fitted, paneled onyx blouse, most reminiscent of a graduation gown. While most of its hem is straight, its middle cape extends further down at a sharp point. On his shoulders is a stole in the same color as his main coat, its triangular ends ending at his waist and decorated with warm brown and pink diamond details resembling staring eyes. A flared risotto-colored collar sits on top of the stole and covers his chin. Next to it is a blush-colored tie with two diamond knots. His sleeves are long and are rolled up at the end with dusty brown diamond cufflinks. On his feet are a pair of charcoal-gray trousers or tights with no visible shoes.

On more informal occasions, Espresso Cookie can be seen without his robe or cape; in this case, he wears a paneled button-down shirt with suspenders and dark pants.

Espresso Cookie is a serious, smug, and intellectual perfectionist who does everything with absolute precision. He speaks with a formal and calm accent and is often terse in his words, to the point of being rude. His facial expression usually defaults to a reserved and confident smile, but there are times when he does not bother hiding his displeasure or exhaustion (such as when faced with a preventable failure or Madeline Cookie's loose mouth). Despite this, he is capable of being polite in his conversations with other Cookies and shows interest in their activities, such as when he asked to read Alchemist Cookie's reagent report.

Espresso Cookie is a disgruntled colleague of Madeline Cookie, assigned to work with him on a mission to retrieve a "treasure from the legends of the past." Given Espresso Cookie's previous disdain for Light Magic and the religious structure of the Republic, he was bound to disapprove of the devout paladin Madeline Cookie. However, the latter's irritating arrogance turned what could have been a simple difference in ideals into a major source of irritation and abrasiveness in the mage. Espresso Cookie is unabashedly critical of Madeline Cookie's beliefs and actions, sometimes even losing his cool with passion when confronted with the other's daily nonsense. As a result, Espresso Cookie would often prefer to avoid the paladin entirely. Madeline Cookie, meanwhile, barely understands or even acknowledges Espresso Cookie's disdain, which inevitably enrages the caster even more. Despite Espresso Cookie's best efforts, fate would have it that they would meet again in the story Couldn't Care Less... And Yet Story . In this story, Espresso Cookie predictably shuns Madeline Cookie for being "too obvious" and "talking nonsense" while helping the Kingdom Cookies build a theater similar to those of the Republic. However, Madeline Cookie's willingness to support his colleague in a related battle later on, and even to support his wounded companion on his way to safety, instills in Espresso Cookie the slightest, tiny bit of respect for his teammate. Espresso Cookie returns the favor and advocates for the paladin's wounds to be bandaged before his own, indicating this newfound appreciation.

Currently, Espresso Cookie still harbors annoyance and deep disagreement with Madeline Cookie, but his more accommodating attitude in Cookie's Odyssey makes it clear that he tolerates the Knight Commander - at least enough to no longer completely ignore him.

A perfectionist, Espresso Cookie expects a lot from both others and himself. His workaholism, coupled with the fact that he is literally made of coffee, usually keeps him awake for days at a time, often resulting in fatigue. He is dedicated to perfecting Coffee Magic to the point of neglecting himself, and intentionally distances students from his classes at the Parfaedia Institute so that he can devote more time to his research. Some students enroll in his classes anyway, prompting Espresso Cookie to demand that they prove their dedication to their research before he will even acknowledge them. If he does accept them, he expresses appreciation for their sincere efforts, praising their skills without hesitation.
