He has orange fur covering his body and tail, and peach-colored skin on his torso, face, ears, knees, hands, and feet. The fur on his head is combed back or bristly, depending on his appearance. He has a pink heart-shaped mark on his face, golden eyes with a winged outline, and thick black eyebrows.

He went to Chang'an, wearing plants as clothing and claiming to be the Monkey King, as he could speak like an average human. The Monkey King would later be trained by Master Subodhi at the Slanting Moon and Three Stars Temple, learning his 72 Transformations and gaining the ability to summon a magic cloud. Hoping to find a weapon, the Monkey King traveled to the Eastern Sea and took the Golden Staff from the Eastern Dragon, which was originally a pillar in the palace. When the Underworld Court summoned the Monkey King to the Underworld, he crossed his name out of the Book of the Dead. The Monkey King also befriended the Six-Eared Macaque, who also lived on Flower Fruit Mountain. As the Monkey King soon began to fear mortality and wanted to protect those he cared about, he began searching for ways to become immortal, eventually forgetting the main reason he was doing so.
