PROFILE

Spinoraptor is a genetically modified species of dinosaur in the Jurassic World Evolution series. It was created by Dr. Henry Wu via combining the base genome of Spinosaurus and Velociraptor.

In Evolution, Spinoraptor is included as a part of the Secrets of Dr. Wu, where it is unlocked on the Tacaño Research Facility, during the eponymous mission.

Spinoraptor then returned in Evolution 2 as a part of the Secret Species Pack.

Characteristics

Engineered at the Hammond Creation Lab by the world-famous geneticist Dr. Henry Wu, Spinoraptor is a large, notably aggressive species. This genus combines the DNA of Spinosaurus and Velociraptor to create a ferocious predator, boasting the size, power, and ferociousness of Spinosaurus and possessing the cunning, speed, and intelligence of Velociraptor. As a social creature, Spinoraptor is most happy when with others of its own species. Although much smaller than its ancestor Spinosaurus, at more than six meters long and weighing around 800 kilograms, Spinoraptor is still an imposing animal and takes its name – which translates to "Spined Thief" – from the large spiny sail on its back.

Dr. Wu bred the genus with the specific intention of creating a fearsome predator that would attract large crowds. Notable for its aggressive temperament and 20cm claws, Spinoraptor is one of the most dangerous dinosaurs in existence. When the first Spinoraptor was released into the Tacaño Research Facility, it was discovered that it had been tampered with in the embryo stage by rivals of the Hammond Foundation, strengthening its hide and preventing it from being subdued by the ACU helicopter, necessitating the creation of a dinosaur capable of defeating the hybrid. Thereafter, the genome was perfected, resulting in more amenable specimens in future operations.

Behaviour

The Spinoraptor is similar in size to the Metriacanthosaurus, and while it shares many traits in common with small carnivores, it is capable of challenging and killing far larger predators. In addition, the Spinoraptor is a social animal and requires between two and four members of their species to remain content. It is the most docile of the hybrid theropods but will hunt guests more aggressively than its counterparts if it does escape.

Spinoraptor is ecologically suited to the same environment as its source genera – roaming grassland and forest areas in search of prey. Spinoraptor is counted as a medium carnivore, meaning it can be housed with small carnivores such as Velociraptor and Troodon, but its incredible ferocity and lightning speed (capable of running at up to 95 km/h) allows it to compete with much larger dinosaurs. Therefore, it will battle with the likes of giant predators, such as its parent species Spinosaurus and even the infamous Tyrannosaurus.

Behind the scenes

Prior to its inclusion in Jurassic World Evolution: Secrets of Dr. Wu, Spinoraptor first appeared in the mobile game Jurassic World: The Game as a hybrid of Spinosaurus and Utahraptor.

Prompt

CABOT FINCH: "I hope you know what you're letting yourself in for, 'cause there's not much room for error when it comes to the Spinoraptor. But what did you expect? We're talking about a Spinosaurus and a Velociraptor all rolled into one!"
