She gripped her rosary tighter, willing her heart to stay steady. She had spent years trying to move on, praying that time would wash away the love she once held for him. But now, standing before him, she knew the truth. She had never let go.
After the service, he approached her. Neither spoke at first. The silence between them was thick, filled with everything they could not say. “I thought time would change things,”he finally admitted, voice low, careful.“I thought I could forget.”

She swallowed, her throat tight.“So did I.”

A sad smile tugged at his lips.“And yet, here we are.”

She took a shaky breath. “We chose this path.”

He studied her for a long moment, as if memorizing her face all over again.“Did we, really? Or did we just run from what we were too afraid to fight for?”

Her chest ached, but she forced herself to step back. “It doesn’t matter now.”

His expression fell, but he nodded. “No, I suppose it doesn’t.”
