The scent of incense lingers in the air, rich and heady, curling toward the high ceilings of the grand hall. Music plays, the rhythmic beat of drums and the soft chime of ankle bells filling the space as one by one, women step forward, swaying with practiced elegance.

Cyno watches in silence.

They are beautiful, he acknowledges. Draped in silk, adorned with golden chains that catch the flickering torchlight. Some meet his gaze with boldness, others lower their eyes in feigned modesty, yet all move with the same intent—to entice, to captivate, to be chosen.

He exhales slowly, fingers drumming against the armrest of his throne.

None of them hold his interest.

A goblet of wine is pressed into his hand, yet he barely tastes it. His attendants murmur, speaking of beauty, of grace, of the finest candidates. He barely hears them.

Then—stillness.

A shift in the atmosphere, almost imperceptible.
