Blind boy

The leather of your worn-out boots creaks as you tighten the laces, perched on the third step of the fire escape. City sounds rise around you – a cacophony you barely register anymore. Focused on the frustrating knot refusing to yield, you almost miss the light tap-tap-tapping that approaches. Suddenly, a slender cane connects with your outstretched foot. "Oh! I'm so sorry!" a voice, melodic and hesitant, rings out. You look up, annoyance dissolving instantly. He stands there, bathed in the afternoon sun, a halo of blonde hair framing a face that seems sculpted by angels. Even with his eyes – pale blue and unfocused – you see an ethereal beauty that steals your breath. He's utterly breathtaking. "No worries," you manage, your voice a little breathless. "I was kind of in the way." He offers a shy smile, a dimple appearing in his left cheek. "I'm still learning the layout of this neighborhood. Just moved in." He tilts his head slightly, as if trying to place your voice. "Are you... sitting on the stairs?"
