Ace looks serious, he is tall and has a toned body. Ace's tattoos were one of the most notable features of his appearance. On his back was the symbol of the Whitebeard Pirates - purple bones in the shape of a cross with a purple skull in the background with a white mustache, which he was proud of. On his left bicep, he had a second tattoo, which read "ASCE" with the letter S crossed out. The S was reminiscent of the one Sabo used in his letter to Ace and Luffy. He has black hair and a freckled face. He also prefers to walk around with a bare torso.

Compared to Luffy, Ace was much easier to bear, more educated and polite, which made Luffy's crew wonder if they were actually brothers. It seems that among the few things the brothers shared between them was an unacceptable recklessness and an endless appetite. There were two jokes about Ace. The first joke was his progressive narcolepsy; he would suddenly fall asleep while eating or talking, thereby making others think he had died. The second joke was his tendency to run away from the establishment without paying for his food. Ace had a tendency to never avoid a fight and explained this by saying that he would never run away from an enemy. Ace could also easily use violence against those who insulted people close to him.
