Knuckles the Echidna (ナックルズ· ·ザエキドゥナ, Nakkurusu za Ekiduna (Knuckles El Equidna in Spain) ) is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is a 16-year-old anthropomorphic red echidna who is both physically powerful and very durable. He is also the guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful ancient gem that he must solemnly protect from any who would seek to abuse its power. He is also the only surviving descendant of the Knuckles Clan's echidna race.[5][6] His dominant traits are his super strength and the two spike-like knuckles on each of his gloves, from which his name is derived, which he can use to dig and climb walls. He can also catch the wind beneath his dreadlocks to glide through the air.

Knuckles' name is derived from the four knuckles, two on each hand, which are actually sharp spikes. According to official Sonic Team polls, Knuckles is the fourth most popular character in the series, behind Tails, Shadow and Sonic.

A loner by nature, Knuckles is independent, headstrong, and serious, but gullible and short-tempered to a fault. He is completely dedicated to his duty, spending most of his time on Angel Island protecting the Master Emerald, and rarely worries about anything that isn't of importance. However, when his friends and others need his help, Knuckles can always rely on him to be willing to leave his post and prove himself a loyal and kind-hearted hero. He is also one of Sonic's oldest friends and rivals.

Although he is usually depicted as the guardian of the Master Emerald, he was originally described as the guardian of the seven Chaos Emeralds of Angel Island.[7]

Knuckles is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur covering most of his body except for his snout, which is peach-colored with a pointed nose. He has a crescent-shaped patch of white fur on his white chest, and his eyes are purple. He also has seven downward-pointing spikes on his head and a medium-sized, twisted tail.

For attire, Knuckles wears red and yellow shoes, each with green cuffs and a gray plate with six bolts on top. He also wears large, white, mitten-like gloves with sock-like cuffs and two spiked knuckles on each hand.

In his youth, Knuckles had black eyes, a larger chest, more defined cheekbones, and was shorter in stature, but has since outgrown these traits.

In the Sonic Riders series, Knuckles wears purple and light grey goggles with dark grey straps around his neck and high-top tennis shoes similar to his standard shoes. He also wears his standard gloves with a dark grey band around each wrist.

Knuckles is strong-minded and proudly loyal to his homeland and does everything in his power to protect it. He is also the rightful guardian of the Master Emerald, a role he takes on with great responsibility. He often guards the emerald from anyone who would steal it or take it for themselves. He is a dedicated warrior, serious and independent by nature. His job as guardian makes him a loner and distrustful of others, in his first appearance he did not hesitate to stop Sonic from becoming Super in order to fulfill his mission. When not performing his duties, Knuckles prefers to spend his time practicing his fighting skills, hunting treasure, or hanging out with his friends. As such, he cares very little about what others think, making him frankly honest, direct, and somewhat self-centered. [15] Knuckles is often stubborn and prefers to do things his way, which makes him clash with others, especially Rouge. Once he becomes a recurring ally of Sonic and part of the "team", Knuckles is actually a good friend and trusted companion, he gets along very well with Sonic and Tails although in video games like Sonic Generations or Sonic Lost World he seems to have a small friendly rivalry with Amy.

Knuckles is heroic, brave, kind-hearted, and selfless, risking his life to save someone or get them out of trouble, and shows empathy for people even if they are villains or enemies. He is also a loyal and caring friend, who is always willing to help his friends out in tough situations, and will do anything to protect them. When not angry, Knuckles is quite laid back, and never cracks under pressure. He can also be very understanding on the sly, and does not take kindly to people who disrespect or hurt his friends or innocents, in any way. Having lived most of his life in isolation, Knuckles grew up believing in honesty, and has a firm, unwavering belief that there is good in everyone, which always allows him to give people second chances. However, due to his lack of social wit, it makes him very naive, incredibly gullible, quick to forgive people, and easily fooled, which has given him a history of being tricked by Dr. Eggman. This has caused Knuckles to be aggressive and suspicious towards anyone he deems questionable. Over time, however, Knuckles has improved on this and become more suspicious of Eggman's trickery. Once he discovers he has been tricked, Knuckles can become quite angry, but quickly regains his composure enough to begin working towards an immediate resolution.

While not a fool, Knuckles is often prone to rash and ill-advised actions. While he is nothing if not one to pick complex strategies, Knuckles often chooses strength as the solution, pushing himself through obstacles while focusing on his goal and ignoring other factors along the way. Likewise, he can also be quite reckless when panicking over the Master Emerald, which is especially evident during the ARK incident where he ended up fighting Sonic over the controls of the space shuttle and causing it to crash, as well as abandoning his ally in panic due to the Master Emerald fragments being lost to space by a collision with a meteorite forcing the cargo bay to open. However, when in his right element, Knuckles can be quite intelligent and cunning, such as setting several successful traps for Sonic and Tails on Angel Island when they first arrived. He is also capable of learning from his mistakes. Knuckles has also shown to have a high degree of leadership skills, most notably during his time as a commander of the Resistance. He is noted to be very charismatic with inspiring speeches, and has a knack for bold plans that provided the Resistance with a much-needed offensive during the War to Reclaim the Planet. However, for all his skills as a leader, Knuckles is still easily distracted and prefers to be on the battlefield rather than in the command center.

Knuckles is said to be somewhat shy around girls,[2] which causes him to act awkwardly around girls such as Amy, Blaze, and Rouge. Due to his isolated lifestyle on Angel Island, Knuckles is very uncomfortable in cities and industrialized or crowded places and is around high-tech objects or devices (mainly because he is not inclined to use them).

Knuckles seems to have lightened up in later games, such as Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. While he still displays a brooding, headstrong, and stubborn attitude, he is better at acknowledging his flaws and displays more personal restraint and better social interaction.

Powers and abilities
Being the guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles is a very powerful fighter. He is a master of martial arts,[15][16] focusing on hand-to-hand combat, and is capable of taking on even the most powerful of opponents relentlessly, such as when he took down several of the Nocturnus Clan's military-trained soldiers. Even more, he has been able to stop Sonic the Hedgehog on several occasions. Furthermore, in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Tails noted that anyone who can beat Knuckles in a fight must be very powerful, a testament to his fighting skills.

Knuckles' signature ability is his immense superhuman strength, which is so vast that he can pulverize solid rock, punch through solid steel, and lift objects several times his size and weight with ease. In comparison, Knuckles' strength is said to be equal to Sonic's speed; taking into account Sonic's measured walking speed, which ranges between Mach 1-5, it would mean that Knuckles is capable of lifting 100-500 metric tons.[note 1] This makes Knuckles one of the physically strongest characters in the series. Knuckles' strength appears to be in his upper body, particularly his arms and fists, the latter of which are as hard as rocks.[17] Further testament to Knuckles' strength is that by punching the ground, he can create fissures, widespread tremors, and even small volcanic eruptions. Additionally, he can punch or throw objects through the air with such force that they ignite from friction. He can even throw punches with such force that they cause air molecules to split and create explosions of enormous power.

Knuckles has been shown to possess the ability to run at breakneck speeds, enough to allow him to keep up with Sonic and Tails' running pace. He is even capable of running fast enough to create afterimages of himself. Still, he is not as fast as Sonic at his top speed, as Knuckles is noted to run rather slowly in comparison. Also, while Knuckles is capable of executing rapid strikes in quick succession within a fraction of a second,[18] he has been noted to have slow movements in combat.

Curiosities
He possesses knowledge about the Master Emerald that others do not know: in Sonic Adventure 2, he himself destroyed the emerald so that neither Rouge nor Eggman could take it, as the emerald can be restored if all the pieces are reunited.
Knuckles' downward-pointing hair "spikes" in real life would resemble a dreadlock-type hairstyle.
In Sonic Heroes, when Knuckles attacks he looks like he's digesting Sh*t, even though the game was rated 3+ years ago.

In Sonic Advance 2 Knuckles is apparently a "boss" of Sky Canyon Zone, meaning that Knuckles was tricked again by Eggman into trying to destroy Sonic, he can be seen in a dialogue after destroying the Egg Saucer: "Sonic: Eggman tricked you, again! Knuckles: Leave me alone!".
Knuckles was originally intended to be Sonic's rival, with hidden powers, a mysterious past, and a cold personality. Later, Knuckles switched to the good side and that role was filled by Shadow.
Tails and Eggman know things about the Chaos Emeralds that Knuckles doesn't, being the guardian of the Emeralds.
Sonic, Tails (to an extent), Knuckles (to an extent), Amy, and Eggman are the only characters who don't have even the slightest backstory, which creates mystery.
On page 30 of the Sonic Adventure Tokyo International Forum Unveiling Booklet, it is specified that Sonic considers Knuckles, Tails, and Amy to be family.
Knuckles and Rouge were inspired by animals of Latin American origin, echidnas originated in Mexico and the white bat originates in Honduras.
