Yumemizuki Mizuki, a clinical psychologist who recently returned to Inazuma, quickly became the center of attention. It soon became known that this woman - or rather, a yumekui-baku in female form - is in fact the main shareholder of the Aisa Baths, not only the main founder, but also the one who made the decision to carry out the renovation.

However, she was not at all like a typical behind-the-scenes investor, demonstrating both the professionalism of a doctor and the dedication of an ordinary employee. Immersed in her duties, she painstakingly consulted each patient, diagnosed, prescribed, and administered treatment with pinpoint precision and calm confidence. Thus, Mizuki quickly became famous among those who suffer from constant nightmares.

Older people may remember being told bedtime stories about yumekui-baku as children, and among them, ironically, the name Yumemizuki Mizuki could probably be found.

However, Mizuki's peaceful and carefree lifestyle does not allow people to associate her with the fearsome yokai from those forgotten legends.

But the Aisa baths are only the first step in Mizuki's grand plan. Although progress is slow, she eventually intends to create a full-fledged conglomerate offering the residents of Inazuma both all sorts of entertainment and mental well-being.

To this end, she continues to explore methods beyond simply harnessing the power of the youkai, from mind-calming exercises to invigorating amusement parks, structured diets, and even traditional games to bring joy and laughter back to her patients.

With little knowledge of Mizuki, the staff who get a glimpse of her busy schedule can't help but worry about her. Could it be that their boss, who is clearly more overworked than any of them, is also burdened by an invisible fatigue and anxiety? While it would be unfair to say that the yumekui baku are completely unknown, they have never enjoyed much notoriety compared to the ubiquitous kitsune that constantly appear in legends and stories, and the feared and revered tengu.

At the great gathering known as the Hyakumonogatari Daikai, the baku were little more than supporting characters. Some sat quietly in a corner sipping tea, others could be found among the lesser yokai, listening reverently to the lofty speeches and grandiose stories of the dignitaries. Still others acted as servants, pouring tea and sake for such refined individuals as Urakusai.

For the young baku Yumemizuki Mizuki, the only pleasure she got from attending such banquets was watching her friend, the young kitsune Yae Miko, impress everyone with her sharp wit and resourcefulness.

Watching Miko argue tirelessly with Urakusai while curled up on the shoulder of her older kitsune sister Saiga, Mizuki always ended up eating several times her usual portion of snacks. Admiring the way she smashed her opponent's arguments to smithereens, Mizuki would often nod in admiration of her friend's quick thinking and even memorize her brilliant lines word for word.

The next morning, when Mizuki saw Miko yawning, she would eagerly approach her with a bowl of freshly fried tofu, ready to resume the conversation they had started the day before.

Sometimes, Mizuki's enthusiasm, bordering on impatience, would catch Miko off guard. In such cases, she would gracefully cover her face with her fluffy tail, then quickly change the subject, saying, "Let's go get some ramen."

Whether they were standing face to face in front of Master Karasu's ramen stand, or sitting on the sturdiest branch of a cherry tree on the southern slope of Mount Yogo, or lounging on the beach in the rays of the setting sun, the young kitsune and the small baku were inseparable, chatting about everything and everyone.

The unspoken secrets of their deepest dreams became treasures they shared with each other.

But as the heir to the Hakushin Kitsune line, the duties that awaited Miko and the responsibilities that came with growing up were truly a heavy burden.

When Miko, and then Mizuki, gained the ability to take human form, the two of them, just like humans, were separated by the currents of life, each carried away to different directions.

Under the guidance of the kitsune Saigū, Miko learned the deep secrets of yokai magic and, surrounded by the maidens of the Great Narukami Shrine, mastered the 880 Commandments of Guji. As a rising star of the Hakushin line, Miko crossed paths with powerful yokai, strengthening her line's position in the yokai world.

Her life was like the endless sea they had once admired together - turbulent and ever-changing, full of dangers and difficulties, but also full of endless possibilities.

Mizuki, meanwhile, had settled into a more peaceful life. Most of the time, she farmed or weaved with her baku friends to make ends meet, but at set times, she would go on patrol, devouring the nightmares of those who came to her for help.

It was as if she were floating on a placid lake, calm and monotonous to the extreme.

Their outings together became less frequent, and eventually it became difficult for them to keep their agreement to spend time together at least once a month.

However, Mizuki did not feel any regret about it.

Every morning, she left the house at the same time as Miko, and when Miko took the plate of fried tofu that Mizuki had prepared for her, she still smiled in the same way that she only smiled at her closest friends.

Mizuki doubted she could handle even a tenth of Miko's responsibilities, and whenever they walked together, she felt crushed under the weight of the gazes directed at them from all sides.

She was more than content with the secondary, silent role. It gave Miko a sense of peace when she needed it. Unfortunately, peaceful life does not last forever.

That day, a black calamity descended upon the land. Youkai and mortals were no different from each other in the face of this evil force, and cries of despair echoed across the islands.

Confused and unable to fight, the yumekui-baku could only flee as fast as they could, hiding in secluded corners.

When the shogun finally destroyed the last vestige of the curse and Mizuki and her people returned, still in shock, the once thriving settlement was reduced to ruins.

Mizuki ran around in confusion, looking for her friend. But everywhere she found only scraps of farewells and tragedies.

Kitsune Saigou, her childhood neighbor, was nowhere to be found. Only Miko remained, her eyes dull, her face pale, and the faintest traces of tears on her cheeks, bowing her head in prayer before the almost withered Sacred Sakura.

After that, the Miko that Mizuki knew took on all the responsibility before she was ready, turning into the respected Guji Yae.

Morning meetings with Miko also became difficult to maintain - the tasks of restoring the Great Narukami Shrine were piling up endlessly, forcing Miko to move into the shrine and work tirelessly day and night.

The people of the Yumekui-baku were also inundated with endless requests. In the ruined Inazuma, youkai and mortals could be found everywhere, their bodies and souls deeply scarred.

The disaster had been pushed back, but the terrible memories it left behind continued to live in the minds of both youkai and mortals, taking deep root in their dreams. These memories caused unrelenting fear every night, weakening the will of the survivors.

This power was so terrible that the elder Yumekui-baku could not resist it. After dispelling the nightmares of some of the shogunate's samurai, he collapsed to the ground and fell into a deep sleep that lasted for several months. When he awoke, the colossal damage he had suffered forced him to retire.

It was then that Mizuki, a previously unknown young Yumekui-baku, revealed her extraordinary talent. By extracting the black poison from the minds of those affected, she experienced pain comparable to deep cuts and burns, but at the same time avoided long periods of sleep, which often lasted for half a year.

Thus, Mizuki became the hope of the suffering. Every day, she helped them free themselves from the torment of nightmares, enduring immeasurable pain. Then, she staggered away, looking for a secluded corner to cope with her burden alone.

This was perhaps the most difficult time for Mizuki. She shared the suffering of others every moment. No matter whether it was day or night, all she saw was darkness, tinged with purple, flowing and spreading like blood dripping from an open wound.

Fortunately, the image of her close friend was still in her memory. When Mizuki was on the verge of a breakdown, that glow of cherry blossoms helped her regain her sanity. "As Guji, Miko must help the shogun solve the problems of this world... I must also fulfill my duty by helping everyone overcome their mental suffering!"

With this support, Mizuki was able to continue her work.

However, she had forgotten that if she immersed herself in her work, centuries would pass in the blink of an eye.

While Mizuki tended to countless patients and soothed the echoes of the wounds left behind, the Miko she knew had been transformed by the trials that befell Guji. Now, she was more likely to maintain a playful attitude when confronted with the fleeting world and its inhabitants.

Sitting together occasionally at an old ramen stand, the two of them, who had always shared everything, found themselves trapped in awkward silence after several failed attempts to open their hearts.

After much thought, Mizuki decided to give in.

In that disaster, the pain Miko had felt was far greater than her own. Living in the Great Narukami Temple was a toil so severe that no ordinary youkai could imagine.

Who knows, without her caustic composure, Miko might not have been able to withstand the avalanche of events?

It's natural for different feelings to arise when looking at different scenery.

At least they fulfill their duties conscientiously. Everything that exists today is the result of the best decisions each of them could make.

Treating a loved one as an emotional anchor, expecting them to remain forever a figure etched into your memories, will undoubtedly become a prison for both of you.
